Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC), has an opening for a Correctional Industries Supervisor 1 (General Industries) position at Mac Dougall-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, CT. This hazardous duty position is located within the Metal Shop responsible for producing products such as picnic table frames, aluminum signpost frames, plow pins, sign and cone holders, pre‑warning sign frames, HEI dump conveyors, pipe gates, commissary carts, wing carts, truck boxes, metal silverware holders, and many other projects.

Position Highlights
  • Full-time, Monday–Friday schedule (36.25 hours per week)
  • First shift; hours are 6:15 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
  • On‑site position; not eligible for hybrid work.
  • Hazardous duty position – selected candidates must attend a 14‑week hazardous duty (paid) training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development.
Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and instruct inmates in skilled craftwork, manufacturing methods, and safety rules in the metal fabrication industries.
  • Assign work to inmates.
  • Generate and maintain cost reports, production inventory data, and time records.
  • Maintain discipline and enforce security measures within assigned areas.
  • Conduct performance reviews of inmates.
  • Perform related duties as required.
About Us

The Mac Dougall‑Walker Correctional Institution is a level 4/5, high‑/maximum security facility for adult males. It is the largest correctional facility in New England, covering 140 acres. The campus offers educational programs (ABE, Pre‑GED, GED, Special Education, TSOL) and vocational training (Vocational Maintenance, Electro‑Mechanical, Micro Computers, Electronic Repair, Dental, and Commercial Cleaning). The Industries program employs up to 70 inmates in metal fabrication and related jobs.

Purpose

of Job Class (Nature of Work)

Act as a working supervisor and provide instruction for a group of inmates engaged in the manufacture, production, or processing of products or services.

Examples of Duties
  • Supervise and instruct inmates in manufacturing methods, tools, safety rules, and equipment maintenance.
  • Plan and route work; assign inmates to tasks.
  • Estimate supplies, requisition materials, and arrange for outside service.
  • Maintain production, inventory, and time records; prepare reports.
  • Maintain discipline and enforce security measures.
  • Review and evaluate inmate performance.
  • Support custodial forces in emergencies.
  • May operate a motor vehicle as required.
  • Perform related duties as needed.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • In depth knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment in the occupational area.
  • Knowledge of production planning and control methods.
  • Interpersonal and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret plans, blueprints, and diagrams.
  • Ability to keep records, prepare reports, and operate computers.
  • Ability to perform under stress and remain calm.
  • Supervisory ability.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involving production, production planning, and/or quality control, with responsibility for supervising other workers.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier, or large compound may be substituted on a year‑for‑year basis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising in a production manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in metalworking processes (welding, milling, drilling, lathe turning, CNC operation, sheet metal fabrication).
  • Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and CAD drawings.
  • Experience with industry computer software such as Mastercam, AutoCAD, Solid Works, and CNC machinery.
  • Experience training, instructing, coaching, and monitoring a diverse group of people.
  • Experience enforcing safety protocols
