Correctional Industries Supervisor ; General Industries

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC), has an opening for a Correctional Industries Supervisor 1 (General Industries) position at Mac Dougall‑Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield, CT. This hazardous duty position is located within the Metal Shop responsible for producing production items such as picnic table frames, aluminum signpost frames, plow pins, sign and cone holders, pre‑warning sign frames, Heil dump conveyors, pipe gates, commissary carts, wing carts, truck boxes, metal silverware holders and many more projects.

• Full‑time, Monday–Friday schedule (36.25 hours per week).
• First‑shift; hours are 6:15 a.m.–1:30 p.m.
• On‑site position; not eligible for hybrid work.
• Hazardous duty position; selected candidates will attend a 14‑week hazardous duty (paid) training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development in Cheshire, CT.

• Supervise and instruct inmates in skilled craftwork in the metal fabrication industries, including methods and techniques of manufacturing, proper use of tools/materials, safety rules, and maintenance/repair of equipment.
• Assign work to inmates.
• Generate and maintain cost reports, production inventory data, and time records.
• Maintain discipline and enforce security measures within assigned areas.
• Conduct performance reviews of inmates.
• Perform related duties as required.

Mac Dougall‑Walker Correctional Institution is a level‑4/5, high/maximum security multi‑mission facility for adult males. It is the largest correctional facility in New England. The facility offers a full range of educational programs (ABE, Pre‑GED, GED, Special Education, TSOL) and vocational training (Vocational Maintenance, Electro‑Mechanical, Micro Computers, Electronic Repair, Dental, Commercial Cleaning). The Industries program employs up to 70 inmates, and other inmates work in the Food Service Operation and janitorial functions.

Four (4) years of experience in a manufacturing environment involving production, production planning, or quality control, with responsibility for the production output of other workers.

• Experience supervising within a production manufacturing environment.
• Experience in metalworking processes (e.g., welding, milling, drilling, lathe turning, CNC operation, sheet‑metal fabrication).
• Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and CAD drawings.
• Experience with industry computer programming such as Mastercam, AutoCAD, Solid Works, and CNC software and machinery.
• Experience training, instructing, coaching, and monitoring production output of a diverse group of people.
• Experience enforcing safety protocols and conducting inspections.
• Experience tracking production metrics, scheduling work, and improving efficiency to meet deadlines.
• Attention to detail and quality‑control mindset.
• Experience in fast‑paced, ever‑changing production environments.
• Problem‑solving ability and building positive, productive working relationships.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.

• Must have reached 18th birthday.
• High school diploma or GED required at the time of appointment.
• Must complete a formal correctional work training course.
• Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License, a Commercial Driver’s License, or both.
• May be required to travel.

In addition to the review of references and factual accuracy, a thorough background investigation will be conducted before certification.

Must have general good health, full physical and mental ability to perform all duties, and be free from diseases or conditions that impair performance. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled‑substance screening, is required upon conditional offer.

Incumbents may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates with weaponized tools; may experience loud machine noise, chemical fumes, tiring positions, and high‑speed or high‑temperature machinery.
