Black Cape - Stellar Staff Accountant
Locations:
Arlington, VA (primarily remote with occasional onsite visits)
We are looking for a detail‑oriented Staff Accountant to support day‑to‑day accounting operations in a growing environment. This role will focus on maintaining accurate financial records, supporting the monthly close process, and assisting with invoicing and cost tracking related to government contracts. The role will also support financial reporting, audit preparation, and process improvement in a small, fast‑paced environment.
This is a hands‑on role with visibility into core accounting processes and an opportunity to build broader experience over time, including exposure to financial reporting, compliance, and process improvement. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in Quick Books, familiar with , and able to manage core accounting responsibilities with consistency and attention to detail.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare and post journal entries and perform account reconciliations
- Support monthly and year‑end close processes
- Assist in preparation of financial statements and internal reporting
- Process and manage accounts payable, vendor payments, and expense reports
- Support accounts receivable, invoicing, and collections
- Assist with audit preparation and documentation
- Support cost tracking and project‑based accounting, including government contracts where applicable
- Support financial planning and analysis activities
- Help maintain accurate financial records and ensure compliance with GAAP
- Experience supporting monthly close activities (journal entries, reconciliations)
- Working knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable processes
- Proficiency in Quick Books Online and Quick Books Time
- Experience using or similar AP tools
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
- Basic understanding of GAAP principles and regulatory compliance
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, data organization)
- Experience supporting financial reporting and preparing basic financial statements
- Ability to work independently in a small team environment with limited oversight
- Experience working with government contracts or federal clients
- Familiarity with cost tracking, job costing, and contract‑based accounting
- Exposure to FAR/DFARS or DCAA‑related requirements
- Experience in a government contractor or professional services environment
- Interest in developing deeper expertise in financial reporting, compliance, and controls
- Ability to identify and suggest improvements to accounting processes
- Experience with WAWF (Wide Area Workflow) or similar government invoicing systems
- Familiarity with revenue recognition and funding reconciliation in a government contracting environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Approximately 5 years of relevant accounting experience
- Experience in a small to mid‑sized business environment preferred
