High School Associate Teacher

General Definition and Conditions of Work

Performs difficult professional work providing a broad range of teaching services, assisting students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student's ability; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;

visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. Some teaching specialties (i.e. music, art, physical education, etc.) may require hearing, vision, physical coordination and/or exertion and effort in excess of those listed above.

Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Establishing a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Develop lesson plans and use instructional materials.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences.
  • Integrate subject area content and technology.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
  • Candidates must possess strong communication skills and the ability to build effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community, while collaborating with stakeholders to foster a positive educational experience.
  • Teach reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, music and other subjects based on approved course of study.
  • Establish and maintain standards of behavior.
  • Evaluate students' academic and social growth, keep appropriate records, prepare progress reports and report cards; submit all documents in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means.
  • Identify student needs, assist with assessment of needs and request special services as necessary.
  • Maintain professional competence through in‑service education and self‑selected professional growth activities.
  • Select and requisition books and instructional materials.
  • Administer group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures.
  • Participate in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required.
  • Participate in child study, Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings.
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of elementary education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree required. Successful experience working with students in a classroom setting preferred.

Special Requirements
  • Must commit to working for Suffolk Public Schools for a minimum of two years upon obtaining eligibility for a teaching license.
  • This position requires a commitment to pursuing the qualifications needed for a Virginia teaching license within the one‑year (school year) employment term.
  • Within 30 days of initial acceptance as an Associate Teacher, employee must be actively enrolled in courses that lead to licensure.
