Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: 2650 SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
Perform professional work preparing and providing training and instruction to children with disabilities, individually and in groups; motivate students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; perform related tasks as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal and Coordinator of Special Education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TYPICAL TASKS- Teaching students with disabilities; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
- Assesses and evaluates needs of students.
- Develops individualized educational programs and lesson plans.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences based on needs and abilities of students.
- Provides instruction in individual or group sessions.
- Formulates and implements functional behavior assessment and behavior assessment plan.
- Participates in child study meetings.
- Evaluates students' progress, maintains appropriate records, prepares progress reports.
- Maintains professional competence through inservice education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials.
- Establishes a class environment favorable to learning.
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with established procedures.
- Adopts teaching materials and methods to match the learning style of the student.
- Integrates subject area content with technology.
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials.
- Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required.
- Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of special education and specialty area; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching of students with disabilities; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents;
ability to operate a personal computer.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in an acceptable field.
Special RequirementsEligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
Job Requirements- Bachelor degree preferred.
