Position Title: 2610 Elementary Teacher
General Definition and Conditions of Work:
Performs difficult professional work providing a broad range of teaching services, assisting students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning in accordance with each student's ability; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.
Essential Functions / Typical Tasks:
- Establishing a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning; teaching a broad range of subjects; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
- Develop lesson plans and use of instructional materials;
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences;
- Integrates subject area content and technology;
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district;
- Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, music and other subjects based on approved course of study;
- Establishes and maintains standard of behavior;
- Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, prepares progress reports and report cards; submits all documents in timely manner;
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means;
- Identifies student needs, assists with assessment of needs and requests special services as necessary;
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional growth activities;
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
- Administers group standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
- Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required;
- Participates in child study, Individual Education Plan (IEP) and Behavioral Intervention Plan (BIP) meetings;
- Performs related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of elementary education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in elementary education or an acceptable related field.
Special Requirements:
Eligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
