POSITION TITLE

2540 ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNER (ELL TEACHER)

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

Under the guidance of the Building Principal and the Coordinator of English Instruction, the English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher supports students identified as English Language Learners through a variety of instructional settings. These include teaching ELL-designated high school courses, co‑teaching in general education classrooms, providing small group and one‑on‑one instruction, and consulting with classroom teachers to support language development and academic success.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

  • Identify students as English Language Learners using district-established criteria.
  • Administer language screeners and formative assessments to evaluate English language proficiency and identify potential language barriers to academic success.
  • Evaluate the language needs of students whose families speak a language other than English at home and recommend appropriate language supports.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate instructional programs tailored to meet the individual needs of ELL students.
  • Provide instruction through various models including direct teaching, co‑teaching, small group, and one‑on‑one instruction.
  • Create individual language goals for students requiring language support.
  • Use research‑based language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency.
  • Create and manage a schedule that maximizes instructional time and meets student needs.
  • Collaborate with the ELL team to plan instruction, analyze data, and refine programming.
  • Serve as a resource for classroom teachers by sharing strategies to support ELL students’ academic achievement.
  • Consult with staff and model effective instructional strategies and language support techniques.
  • Provide professional development and instructional resources to colleagues related to English language learning.
  • Communicate student progress and language needs with teachers, administrators, and families.
  • Act as a liaison between the school and ELL families, including helping families engage in school events and activities.
  • Advocate for ELL students and their families to ensure equitable access to school programs and services.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development, including ELL staff meetings and trainings.
  • Stay informed about and follow the current ELL Teachers Manual, including programming guidelines and required documentation.
  • Fulfill compliance responsibilities in accordance with the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
  • Maintain required certifications and professional learning hours.
  • Comply with district, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional Job Functions

  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Maintain knowledge of software and equipment used to perform duties, such as student information systems, word processing database, spreadsheets, e‑mail, and office equipment.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Fluency in multiple languages is preferred.
  • Knowledge of teaching principles, practices, techniques and approaches.
  • Knowledge of current trends, theories and technologies pertaining to learning and instruction.
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures and techniques, test construction and evaluation methods.
  • Knowledge of subject material, concepts and issues related to grade/subject of assignment.
  • Understanding of basic office equipment and software used by the district in maintaining records, and files (i.e. word processing software, student record databases).
