Job Description

Position Title: 8800 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

General Definition and Conditions of Work: Performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.

Physical requirements:

This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; requires climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication and hearing are required; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data. Worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Essential

Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Assist and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assist professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests and assessments.
  • Assist in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assist with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assist with classroom behavioral management to minimize distractions, maintain a safe and orderly classroom, keep students on task.
  • Assist students in non-instructional areas such as supervising lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related areas.
  • Accompany students on field trips for supervision.
  • Construct, copy, distribute and use educational materials as needed.
  • Assist teacher with parent contact to foster effective involvement.
  • Assist students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement, and IEP objectives.
  • Participate in the IEP process and serve as resource for the student personnel evaluation team.
  • Assist students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living to maximize participation.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing assistance for students with disabilities or other special needs.

Thorough knowledge of the subject(s) taught; of principles, practices, and procedures; of methodology of effective teaching; of school division rules, regulations, and procedures; ability to maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, and parents; ability to operate a personal computer.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a relevant field.

Eligible Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
