Job Description

Position Title: 8800 SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

General Definition and Conditions of Work: Performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal.

Physical requirements:

this is sedentary work requiring up to 10 pounds of force occasionally; climbing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions required. Vocal and hearing communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word. Visual acuity required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work. No adverse environmental conditions.

Essential

Functions / Typical Tasks
  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assists professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record‑keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and keep students on task.
  • Assists students in non‑instructional areas such as supervising lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related areas.
  • Accompanies students on field trips to assist with supervision.
  • Constructs, copies, distributes, and uses educational materials as needed.
  • Assists teacher with parent contact to foster effective and participatory parent involvement.
  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement relative to IEP objectives.
  • Participates in IEP process and serves as a resource for the student personnel evaluation team as needed.
  • Assists students with physical or mental disabilities with activities of daily living to maximize participation in school or learning activities.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations, and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, and parents;

ability to operate a personal computer.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in an area of specialization or an acceptable field.

Eligible a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
