Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE:
2650 SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Performs difficult professional work preparing and providing training and instruction to children with disabilities, individually and in groups; motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the School Principal and Coordinator of Special Education.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light work requiring up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds frequently, and negligible force constantly; some medium work requiring up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly; involving stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, feeling and repetitive motions; vocal, hearing, and visual acuity requirements as specified.
- Teaching students with disabilities; motivating students to achieve maximum potential.
- Assesses and evaluates needs of students;
- Develops individualized educational programs and lesson plans;
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences based on needs and abilities of students;
- Provides instruction in individual or group sessions;
- Formulates and implements functional behavior assessment and behavior assessment plans;
- Participates in child study meetings;
- Evaluates students' progress, maintains appropriate records, prepares progress reports;
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials;
- Establishes a class environment favorable to learning;
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with established procedures;
- Adopts teaching materials and methods to match the learning style of each student;
- Integrates subject area content with technology;
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials;
- Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required;
- Performs related tasks as required.
Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty area; thorough knowledge of effective teaching methodologies for students with disabilities; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to foster effective relationships with students, parents and colleagues; ability to operate a personal computer.
Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in an acceptable field.
Special RequirementsEligible for a Virginia teaching license with appropriate endorsement.
