Position: Library Services Coordinator (Community Learning, Part-Time)

Description

Under limited supervision, the Community Learning Coordinator plans, implements, and evaluates programs, events, and other learning opportunities for all ages, abilities, and content areas—inside the building, virtually, and in an outreach capacity. This role ensures all services align with the library's strategic goals and are implemented effectively. The coordinator supervises, trains, and evaluates a specialized content area such as outdoor learning, environmental and nature-based education, multi-generational programs, makerspace experiences, or other emerging library services.

They establish programming standards, research and formulate long-range goals, develop guidelines and procedures, and plan services and goals. The position reports to Community Learning leadership and is eligible to work up to 29 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions
  • Coordinates, implements, and evaluates programs, events, and other learning opportunities for the public in the Suffolk Public Library System and in an outreach capacity in coordination with the Community Engagement Department.
  • Develops public learning opportunities for all ages with a specialized area, based on community need in a variety of formats and learning styles, including in-person and virtual events, courses, asynchronous challenges, and other learning opportunities.
  • Develops strategies to meet community learning needs and creates short- and long-range plans and objectives for classes, events, and other learning opportunities.
  • Performs tasks at the circulation desk of the library: checks materials in and out, prepares books for shelving, registers and processes library cards, collects book depository materials, and secures the library at close of business.
  • Directs, advises, provides assistance, and instructs patrons in locating library materials, responding to reference and directional questions, and placing reserve requests.
  • Receives, reviews, and responds to community feedback.
  • Attends or conducts staff meetings to exchange information; participates in in-service training, professional classes, seminars, or conferences to further develop professional skills.
  • Provides guidance to volunteers and staff, ensuring compliance with library policies and procedures.
  • Contributes to staff meeting agendas and leads discussions to explore continuous improvement opportunities, solicit feedback, promote teamwork, provide training; also leads or participates in a team process to develop criteria for interviewing, evaluating, and selecting candidates.
  • Responds to internal and external customers in crisis, using independent judgment and negotiation skills to determine appropriate resolution.
  • Identifies and analyzes building maintenance and equipment problems to ensure safety, security, and comfort for customers.
  • Documents accident, personnel, and incident reports to comply with City, State, and Federal guidelines.
  • Leads, facilitates, and participates in City and department teams to develop strategic plans, resolve problems, and improve current processes.
  • Monitors, evaluates, and coordinates integration of new technologies into library services.
  • Provides efficient technology support to staff and community on a variety of equipment and resources.
  • Learns, understands, and incorporates emerging technology trends to predict the direction of change and design responsive library services and programs.
  • Utilizes tools to conduct staff assessments, develop individual and group strategies, and analyze data to determine department needs.
  • Designs and conducts training needs assessments; designs, monitors, and analyzes surveys.
  • Supervises, monitors, and evaluates the operations and staff of a library location and assists in planning and implementing library services aligned with organizational vision, mission, values, and goals.
  • Prepares and schedules staff, authorizes leave, and documents quarterly and annual employee performance feedback to encourage and counsel staff.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff and provides guidance to volunteers.
