Civil Project Engineer
Under general supervision, the Civil Project Engineer performs professional and technical work in conducting engineering reviews of capital, commercial, and subdivision construction plans to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and City codes and engineering standards. The role involves reviewing construction documents for sound engineering design and managing projects related to public works systems, departmental capital improvement projects, and development project reviews.
Additionally, the engineer provides technical support in responding to citizen concerns pertaining to roadway improvements, drainage, erosion and sediment control, traffic, or other departmental issues.
- Review commercial and subdivision construction site plans and calculations for compliance with State, Federal, and City codes and engineering standards.
- Ensure Public Works capital projects comply with relevant codes and standards.
- Evaluate preliminary subdivision plats for consistency with storm drainage and traffic master plans.
- Provide support for the Erosion & Sediment Control Program, including reviewing land clearing plans, erosion and sediment control plans, and bond estimates.
- Issue permits, coordinate inspections, and cite violations as appropriate.
- Respond to citizen concerns pertaining to drainage, erosion, traffic, or other departmental issues.
- Proficiency in Civil 3D, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- At least 5 months of previous experience in engineering plan review, project management, computer-aided engineering design, or personal computer operations.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to read and interpret construction documents, such as contracts, commercial site plans, subdivision plats, and blueprints.
Skills & Qualifications
- Prefer Virginia Engineer-in-Training certification.
- Must obtain DEQ Erosion and Sediment Control and Stormwater Basic and Plan Review Certifications within 12 months of hire if assigned to Public Works.
- Knowledge of civil engineering and construction principles, practices, and procedures.
- Understanding of engineering standards for reviewing site plans related to traffic, grading, hydrology, storm drainage, and infrastructure layout.
- Ability to make engineering judgments/decisions in evaluating field and site plan problems.
- Knowledge of departmental terminology, principles, and methods.
- The position is based onsite, requiring attendance 5 days a week in an office located in Suffolk, VA.
- The team is known for great morale, being highly tenured, and focusing on development and excellent communication skills.
This is a Permanent position based out of Suffolk, VA.
Pay And BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $50.00/hr.
