Under general supervision, performs supervisory and general and specialized law enforcement work for the uniform, community services, support, special investigations, and detective divisions of the City Police Department. Work involves supervising and participating in activities of the divisions, offering advice and assistance to subordinate personnel as problems arise, and continually observing personnel to ensure that law enforcement work meets accepted standards.
The employee is responsible for answering complaint calls, investigating disturbances, crimes and complaints, and preparing detailed reports. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing all assignments without reference to higher authority. Employee must also exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in frequent contact with the general public. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work. Job functions may vary based on area of assignment within the Police Department.
Three (3) years in the Police Officer grade with the Suffolk Police Officer grade with the Suffolk Police Department by the date that the written test is administered; or
Three (3) years in the Senior Police Officer grade with the Suffolk Police Department by the date that the written test is administrated; or
Three (3) years in the Senior Police Officer grade with the Suffolk Police Department by the date that the written test is administered.
Candidates must meet the following requirements at the time of application through promotion:
- Minimum of Satisfactory on each annual evaluation for the previous two (2) calendar years;
- No suspensions or demotions within the past two (2) years;
- No more than one (1) written reprimand in the past two (2) years, excluding City vehicle accidents;
- No more than two (2) preventable City vehicle accidents in the past two (2) years;
If promoted to the position, must be willing to complete the Suffolk Leadership Academy program within one year from the date of promotion.
