Position: Registered Nurse (RN) - ICU - Rotating - PRN

Job Summary

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) consists of a 7‑bed Medical/Surgical ICU with private rooms equipped for ECG, dialysis, SpO2, and hemodynamic pressure monitoring. The unit is supported by 24/7 telemedicine intensivist services and staffed by registered nurses, patient care technicians, a full‑time Nurse Director, and a Clinical Coordinator. Clinical Nurses (I–III) assist the healthcare team with prevention, wellness, comfort, medication safety, and leadership at the unit level.

Responsibilities

Clinical Nurse I
  • Integrate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families.
  • Assist in the prevention of illness, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort.
  • Provide direction, education, and begin to acquire leadership skills at the unit level.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
Clinical Nurse II
  • Demonstrate mastery of clinical skills and apply knowledge to a specific patient population.
  • Recognize changes in patient situations and intervene appropriately.
  • Mobilize resources to meet individualized needs of patients and families.
  • Provide direction, education, and assume leadership responsibilities at the unit level.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care and administer medications safely.
Clinical Nurse III
  • Apply clinical knowledge at the unit level to a specific patient population.
  • Anticipate changes in patient situations and intervene promptly.
  • Serve as a role model; provide direction, education, and leadership in the clinical setting.
  • Deliver and accurately document direct, age‑specific care and administer medications safely.
Qualifications

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire
Current RN licensure in Virginia or an eligible compact state.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Continued Employment
Current RN licensure in Virginia; AHA BLS or equivalent HCP certification.

Experience Required
Clinical Nurse I:
None
Clinical Nurse II: 12–24 months RN experience
Clinical Nurse III: 3 years of clinical experience

Experience Preferred
Clinical Nurse I:
Prior experience as an LPN, nursing assistant, or care partner in acute care.
Clinical Nurse II and III:
Academic health‑care experience or experience with a similar patient population in acute care.

Education/Training Required
Diploma or Associate Degree in nursing from a state‑approved program. Non‑BSN RNs must enroll in an approved RN‑to‑BSN program within two years of hire and complete it within five years unless grandfathered.

Education/Training Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher from an accredited program. Clinical Nurse III:
Certification in the specialty area.

Independently follow documented physician or licensed independent provider orders. Practice within the regulations governing nursing in Virginia, guided by the ANA Code of Ethics and VCUHS policies and procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Organize work and delegate to and supervise others (RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
Shift and Schedule
  • Clinical Nurses work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Individual shift rotation and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager/Practice Manager and may be adjusted as needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting 20‑50 lbs
  • Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, reaching overhead or repetitively
  • Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, written communication, reading, logical thinking, emotional resilience in a fast‑paced, noisy environment, and ability to handle multiple priorities and intense interactions.
