Position: Nurse Manager (RN) - Ortho/Spine/Bariatrics

Overview

Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Clinical Nurse Manager for the Ortho Spine Bariatrics Unit in Suffolk, VA.

The RN Clinical Manager for Ortho/Spine/Bariatrics will oversee 45 direct reports, including RNs, Unit Coordinators, Patient Care Technicians, LPNs, and administrative staff. Hours are primarily 8‑hour days with 24/7 accountability, and flexibility for evening, weekend, and night shift staff is expected.

The Clinical Nurse Manager has overall accountability for daily operations of clinical areas, supervising patient‑care staff, ensuring excellent patient safety, quality outcomes, and extraordinary patient/family experience. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, developing and retaining staff, developing a highly reliable team, demonstrating effective communication, assisting in unit budget development and monitoring, coordinating purchasing and payroll processes, and serving as a clinical resource to team members.

About the Unit

1 East Surgery Unit is a 24‑bed unit specializing in orthopedics, spine, and bariatrics, designed to provide high‑quality, short‑stay care. The team also sees high‑acuity surgical patients from Endoscopy, General Surgery, and GI. Average patient stay is 1‑2 days. The RN staff can expect a 1:5 or 1:6 ratio and can expect an average of 6‑8 patient discharges per shift. It is a well‑staffed, fast‑paced environment that values ongoing staff development through a comprehensive orientation program, with bi‑weekly meetings between managers and educators to refine learning strategies and enhance clinical skills.

This makes 1 East Surgery an excellent environment for both experienced RNs and new graduates.

Supported by Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) who assist with ambulation, labs, and other tasks, and with dedicated Unit Coordinators and preceptors fostering a nurturing learning environment, the unit offers opportunities for skill development, professional growth, and long‑term career advancement. Education
  • Bachelor of Science Nursing – BSN (Required)
  • MSN (Preferred)
Certification / Licensure
  • Registered Nursing License (Required)
  • Nationally recognized certification (Preferred)
  • CNL or CMNL (preferred)
  • CMSRN – Certified Medical‑Surgical RN (Preferred)
Experience
  • 1 year of previous management experience OR 2 years of support leadership RN position (Required)
  • 3 years nursing experience (Required)
  • 5+ years nursing experience (Preferred)
  • Medical‑Surgical or Oncology background (Preferred)
