The City Of Suffolk is looking for excellent certified police officers to transfer to its growing force. As an already certified officer, you will receive the following:
- Minimum credit of 50% of your current years of service for salary determination purposes
- Only 1 year with our department to be eligible to apply for specialty units
- No Recruit Academy – modified post‑academy and field training for the City of Suffolk instead

- Patrol an assigned area of the city using a police vehicle to detect and deter criminal activities; monitor radio calls; inspect troublesome areas and check security of business establishments; answer complaint calls and investigate crimes and disturbances; interview witnesses; gather evidence and transport to the lab; interrogate suspects and make arrests; prepare investigation reports.
- Serve legal papers such as summons and warrants and civil process papers; explain briefly the meaning of the papers served and make arrests when necessary.
- Prepare various reports and forms such as case files, offense reports, accident reports, tow sheets and cards, property vouchers, lab requests, etc.
- Receive and handle citizen complaints and inquiries.
- Transport prisoners and mental patients as required; serve mental papers.
- Investigate accidents; perform first aid; secure and clear accident scenes; direct traffic; investigate fatalities of accidents.
- Investigate misdemeanor and felony crimes; conduct building checks; report traffic hazards.
- Process minor crime scenes including collecting, packaging, and vouchering evidence, photographing, and sketching; prepare felony case reports.
- Monitor vehicle speeds with radar; conduct criminal and driving checks; issue summons for violations; operate breathalyzer machine.
- Conduct surveillance using relevant techniques.
- Assist state and federal agencies in conducting various investigations; prepare affidavits and search warrants; testify in court.
- Teach programs based on topic areas of assigned units; prepare visual aids, lesson plans, handouts, etc.; participate in extracurricular activities; build a rapport with program participants to accomplish program intent.
- Perform duties relating to recruitment of new officers; coordinate and participate in training sessions; administer physical agility tests; coordinate appointments for oral review board, polygraph and employment physicals; conduct background checks.
- Answer confidential “crime line” public access phone for reporting crime and other information; provide reports to crime stoppers international; maintain records of calls received and numbers calls; meet with board on approval of the “crime line”.
- Act as media contact; provide interviews and materials to the media; attend major media functions.
- Order and issue uniforms and equipment for departmental personnel.
- Process arrest information; note warrants that have been executed; update communications division files.
- Retrieve warrants from magistrate's office and the courts; assign warrant number; log warrants in warrant book; prepare card for communications division files; file warrants; purge felony and misdemeanor warrants as required by law; execute state and local criminal warrants.
- Coordinate policing efforts with civic leagues and community groups; attend civic league and PTA meetings; participate in community functions; act as liaison between schools and Police Department.
- Monitor interior and exterior of school buildings; develop a rapport between police and students to deter crime in schools.
- Prepare brochures and other documents to promote the Police Department.
- Counsel teachers, students, parents, etc.; maintain security during school events.
- Teach boating safety and conduct marine patrol.
- May provide security services for all city owned facilities, council meetings/work sessions, city functions, and escort services for city personnel.
