1st Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications; apx

Akima Systems Engineering (ASE) is looking for a 1st Class Marine Electrician to work in Suffolk, VA. The position requires 50% travel within and outside the continental United States and a work schedule of Monday through Saturday, 10 hours per day as needed. OT and per diem, plus hotel and transportation, will be provided.

• Install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including interior communications.
• Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and shipyard facilities.
• Apply advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems beyond manufacturer manuals.
• Determine circuitry locations and densities, evaluate electromagnetic radiation, isolate malfunctions, and incorporate engineering changes.
• Analyze circuits, calculate wave forms, trace signal flow, and use complex test instruments such as high‑frequency pulse generators, frequency synthesizers, distortion analyzers, and computer control equipment.
• Work may be reviewed by supervisor for general compliance; provide technical guidance to lower‑level technicians.
• Display high levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.
• Under guidance, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures for fleet modernization on U.S. Navy surface ships.
• Lay out, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic aboard Navy vessels.
• Read and interpret schematics, blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents, controlled work packages, formal processes, test documents, reports, and trip reports.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist in diagnosing to eliminate problems efficiently.
• Perform removal and installation of cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck.
• Repair and replace cables/connectors.
• Apply production‑process knowledge toward completion of complicated and non‑routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and related equipment at company or field locations according to quality and safety procedures.
• Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.
• Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications and relations.
• Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.
• Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for a complete installation.

• DoD Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.
• Ability to obtain a CAC card.
• Able to work overtime and weekends per managerial request.
• Able to travel outside Suffolk, Virginia if required.
• High school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate.
• Minimum five years experience operating, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels, MSC or Maritime vessels, and practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment.
• Familiar with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems:
  • MC (General Announcing/Mass Communications)
  • HYDRA (Hierarchical Yet Dynamically Reprogrammable Architecture)
  • IVN (Integrated Voice Network)
  • IVCN (Integrated Voice Communications Network)
  • SATCC (Shipboard Air Traffic Control Communications)
  • SIWCS (Shipwide Inter Wireless Communication System)
• Ability to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric Defense Identification System (DBIS) credential to perform work on‑board U.S. Naval vessels or government‑assigned work.
• Prior experience working with Fiber Optic cables and multi‑pin connectors.
• Possess or provide trade‑specific hand tools.
• Experience working in a team environment and effective communication skills.
• Understanding and ability to accomplish NSI 009‑73 requirements:
  • Inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment.
