Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE
COORDINATOR I TRANSPORTATION
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Plans, directs, coordinates, and oversees all functions related to the operation and maintenance of the division’s transportation department. Responsibilities include the supervision of personnel, management of equipment, and oversight of transportation facilities. The primary objective is to ensure the safe, efficient, and cost‑effective transportation of students to and from school on regularly scheduled routes, as well as to and from destinations within or outside the division for extracurricular, athletic, and other special trips.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, operate, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is also regularly required to stand, walk, and communicate by speaking and hearing. Occasionally, the employee may be required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or maintain balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl;
and use the sense of smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position requires specific visual abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the essential functions of this position, the employee may occasionally be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, electrical hazards and vibration.
The work environment is typically characterized by a moderate to loud noise level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

- Regulatory Compliance: Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and School Board policies governing student transportation, including applicable requirements of the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Monitors transportation operations to maintain compliance with safety standards, driver qualifications, vehicle inspections, and required reporting.
- Budget Management: Assists in the development and administration of the transportation department budget, including monitoring expenditures and identifying cost‑saving opportunities.
- Fleet Management: Oversees fleet maintenance schedules, vehicle replacement planning, inspections, and coordination with maintenance personnel to ensure vehicles remain safe and operational.
- Driver Recruitment and Retention: Supervises the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, evaluation and retention of bus drivers, attendants, and transportation staff.
- Safety and Emergency Planning: Develops, implements, and monitors transportation and safety programs, accident prevention initiatives, emergency response procedures, and evacuation drills.
- Route Planning and Optimization: Oversees the development and evaluation of bus routes and schedules to maximize efficiency while maintaining student safety and service quality.
- Technology Oversight: Utilizes transportation management software, GPS systems, routing applications, and other technology to improve operational efficiency and reporting.
- Customer Service: Responds to and resolves concerns from parents, school administrators, and community members regarding transportation services in a professional and timely manner.
- Data and Reporting: Maintains accurate transportation records and prepares reports related to ridership, routing, accidents, vehicle utilization and regulatory compliance.
