The Physical Science Lab Technician is responsible to the Physical Science Lab Coordinator and the Dean for Mathematics and Sciences. The essential duties of this position are to prepare all of the lab course materials in accordance with the faculty requests and course curriculum, maintain and repair minor equipment and instruments, and assist in training student workers in order to provide a quality and safe lab environment for students.
Set-up, reset for the next instructor and take down individual laboratory experiments according to prep sheets, storing equipment and materials properly.
Prepare chemical solutions following established procedures, including standardizations.
Maintain the lab areas in a clean and safe manner. Follow all safety protocols as outlined in the Chemical Hygiene Plan, including proper disposal of waste, wearing personal protective equipment, and maintaining a clean workroom area.
Assist the Physical Science Lab Coordinator in maintaining minor equipment and instrumentation used within the department (for example: pH meters, balances, melting point apparatus, water bath, oven, centrifuge, titrators, hot plates, telescopes, Pasco sensors and equipment).
Assist the Physical Science Lab Coordinator in ordering and receiving materials and supplies. Inventory materials and supplies updating Access database as required, alerting the Physical Science Lab Coordinator when materials and supplies are running low.
Assist the Physical Science Lab Coordinator with class activities, such as the use of instruments, including the gas chromatograph, the infrared spectrophotometer, and the ultraviolet/visible spectrophotometer. Assist with minor repairs of these instruments.
Assist Physical Science Lab Coordinator and instructors to help assure safety of students.
Research the Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals and solutions, maintaining the most current in binders.
Complete mandatory training for lab safety and college compliance.
Minimum Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Successful completion of one year of college chemistry with laboratory required.
- Two years of college chemistry courses with laboratories or AS preferred.
- Able to work independently and follow directions, written and oral.
- Available to work flexible schedule that may include both day and evening hours.
- Personal transportation available to travel between campuses as needed.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Excellent communication skills, written and oral.
- Good computer skills, including familiarity with Windows 11, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Ability to lift 35 pounds independently.
