The General Maintenance Mechanic reports to the General Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor and the Plant Operations Manager. The position is responsible for performing routine preventative maintenance on HVAC equipment across all Waubonsee Campuses. Additionally, the role includes performing basic electrical and plumbing maintenance tasks.
Responsibilities- HVAC:
Preventative maintenance such as changing air filters, replacing belts, greasing equipment, restarting air handler units, and supporting other mechanical systems. - Plumbing:
Diagnose and repair plumbing issues, fix leaks, unclog drains, replace damaged pipes or fixtures, and develop root‑cause solutions. - Electrical:
Install new electrical systems including wiring, outlets, lighting, ballasts; diagnose and repair electrical problems such as faulty wiring, malfunctioning equipment, and tripped breakers. - Carpentry:
Perform basic carpentry tasks, including fixing damaged woodwork, installing or repairing cabinetry, shelving, trim, cove base, hanging or removing pictures, storage units, and dry‑erase boards. - Locksmith:
Troubleshoot issues with manual and automatic door locking mechanisms. - Painting:
Surface preparation, paint application, color matching, patching, and minor repairs to drywall; maintain/clean painting equipment and tools. - Blueprint Reading:
Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings preferred. - Cleanliness:
Maintain cleanliness and organization in workrooms, warehouses, and storage areas. - Vendor Ordering:
Utilize approved vendor websites to order supplies for jobs, including minor tools, bulbs, ballasts, and other materials. - Team Support:
Provide assistance to General Maintenance Mechanics as required. - Other Duties:
Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two years of experience in a related maintenance field such as HVAC, electrical, plumbing, or general facilities maintenance.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
- Strong team player with ability to work well with others.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Physical ability to lift 80lbs occasionally.
- Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings (preferred).
- Ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, and other elevated platforms.
- Problem‑solving ability to find solutions using creative thinking.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to do frequent climbing, standing, crawling, and walking.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in using smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, and other related devices to perform basic work order functions.
