We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Cost Accountant II to support manufacturing operations through accurate product costing, inventory accounting, and profitability analysis.
This role partners closely with Production, Sales, Technical Services, Supply Chain, and Finance to ensure the integrity of manufacturing costs and provide meaningful financial insights that support business decisions.
The Cost Accountant II takes a lead role in month-end close activities related to inventory and production, develops customer and product profitability reporting, identifies opportunities for cost improvements, and supports continuous process enhancements.
This position may also provide guidance and mentorship to Cost Accountant I team members.
Essential duties and responsibilities- Operational Costing & Month-End Close Lead and coordinate monthly inventory cycle counts and physical inventories with warehouse and operations teams.
- Review, validate, and close production jobs to ensure accurate inventory valuation and cost reporting.
- Review and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), production routings, and standard costs for finished goods.
- Analyze manufacturing variances, including material usage, labor, and overhead, and recommend corrective actions.
- Support month-end and year-end closing activities related to inventory and manufacturing accounting.
- Prepare account reconciliations and assist with inventory reporting.
- Partner with the Senior Financial Analyst and VP of Finance to develop and maintain customer, product, and margin profitability reporting.
- Analyze actual product costs and profitability against standards and expectations.
- Identify trends, cost drivers, and opportunities to improve margins and operational performance.
- Provide financial analysis that supports pricing strategies, new product introductions, and cost reduction initiatives.
- Collaborate with Production, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Sales to improve costing accuracy and operational efficiency.
- Support annual updates to production standards, Bills of Materials, routings, and standard costs.
- Participate in process improvement initiatives that strengthen internal controls and financial reporting.
- Perform ad-hoc financial analysis and support special projects as assigned.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to Cost Accountant I staff.
- Share best practices and assist with training on costing processes and ERP system functionality.
- Serve as a resource for manufacturing accounting questions across the organization.
Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 3-5+ years of manufacturing cost experience, or related field.
- Strong knowledge of standard costing, inventory accounting, Bills of Materials (BOMs), production routings, manufacturing variances, and cost accounting principles.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex financial and operational data and communicate meaningful recommendations.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills; proficiency with Microsoft Word.
- Experience with ERP systems in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships across departments.
