Job Overview

The Special Education Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring adherence to federal, state, and district regulations governing special education programs and services. This position provides leadership and technical expertise to support campuses in maintaining compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and related policies. Key responsibilities include preparing and facilitating Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings; auditing special education records for accuracy and compliance;

and assisting campuses in developing efficient systems for scheduling staffings, managing ARDs, and processing transfer students. The Specialist trains and supports staff in the use of the district's IEP software system, models effective ARD facilitation practices, and responds to compliance-related inquiries from campus and district personnel. The Specialist fosters collaborative and professional communication with campus teams, parents, and district departments to promote consistency, accountability, and high-quality educational support for students with disabilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Compliance Support and Staff Training
  • Attend campus-based departmental meetings
  • Train staff to complete accurate ARD paperwork
  • Assist in planning campus staff developmental needs
  • Review ARD paperwork for accuracy
  • Assist in development of appropriate IEPs
  • Serve as mentor to teachers as they learn compliance guidelines
  • Train teachers to complete accurate student folders
  • Serve as liaison between the special education department and administration on issues related to compliance
Qualifications Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Valid Teaching Certification Issued by Texas Education Agency appropriate to subject and grade level of assignment generic teaching certificate at any level is appropriate
  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience or ARD facilitation
  • Excellent organizational, management and leadership skills

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials.

The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties.

May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.

Additional Information
  • Work is performed generally in a classroom environment and other locations within and outside the school building such as cafeteria, playground, library, etc. The position requires standing, walking, sitting and lifting/ carrying work-related items weighing less than 25 pounds such as papers, books, and instructional supplies. Specialists are instructed to request assistance when lifting/carrying heavy items and when climbing is necessary to prepare displays, bulletin boards, etc.

    Work requires sufficient mobility to move about the classroom and inside and outside the school building. Work environment may be noisy. Work may involve exposure to student body fluids and disease conditions. Work may require exposure to student mal-adaptive behavior. Work involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment and performing job duties.
  • This position is funded by grant funds. This position may be discontinued if grant funds are no longer available.
