Substitute Teacher
In the absence of the classroom teacher, the Substitute Teacher will provide instruction, encourage student progress, and manage the learning environment. Follow the lesson plans provided by the classroom teacher to deliver an effective and appropriate educational program for assigned students. Assignments can be either on a day‑to‑day basis or long term. In a long‑term position, the Substitute may be required to prepare lesson plans and perform other related work as required.

- Maintain discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school policy.
- Continue as much as possible the routines and procedures for the school and classroom to which assigned.
- Establish and maintain a sanitary, safe, orderly, attractive, and positive learning environment for learning.
- Report to the office upon arrival at school; request clarification of school rules and procedures.
- Grade papers and homework, complete accurate records and other required data, and submit reports in a timely manner.
- Maintain strict student and parent confidentiality.
- Provide feedback to the teacher; include comments on the behavior of students, lessons completed, and any possible changes in lesson plans.
- Uphold all district policies, rules, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject.
- Determine if services will be required for the next school day.
- Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible.
- Minimum of 60 college hours.
- Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Valid teaching certification issued by the Texas Education Agency appropriate to the subject and grade level of assignment preferred.
- Successful completion of the Teacher Insight program.
- Ability to be organized, creative, independent and self‑motivated, enthusiastic, dependable, detailed‑oriented and driven by excellence.
- Excellent communication skills orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school instructional and support staff, and district staff.
- Ability to adjust tasks and focus with composure in accordance with changing deadlines and priorities.
- Ability to be flexible and receptive to change.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Fort Bend Independent School District public school mission, goals and organization.
- Ability to manage student behavior.
- Ability to utilize multimedia equipment and materials and computer technology.
Work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations, and meeting rooms, and requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or carrying work‑related items weighing less than 40 pounds. Tasks may require use of hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work may involve everyday risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May have to work prolonged or irregular hours and must maintain emotional control under stress.
Work is performed generally in a classroom environment and other locations within and outside the school building such as cafeteria, playground, library, etc. The position requires standing, walking, sitting, and lifting/carrying work‑related items weighing under 25 pounds. Substitutes are instructed to request assistance when lifting heavy items and when climbing is necessary to prepare displays or bulletin boards. The position requires sufficient mobility to move about the classroom and inside and outside the school building.
The work environment may be noisy. It may involve exposure to student body fluids and disease conditions, as well as exposure to student maladaptive behavior. Work involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions when operating equipment and performing job duties.
