Job Overview:
The Assistant Director will direct and manage the planning, programming, and implementation of supports and services for students with disabilities. Significant communication with campus administrators will be expected to implement instructional and behavioral services and to monitor and oversee training. The incumbent will supervise and build capacity of the Special Education and 504 staff, oversee evaluation processes, and ensure compliance with SPP Indicator 11 & 12, PEIMS data, and related submissions.
Description
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Evaluation
- Oversee all special education evaluation systems and processes within the district, including 504 and dyslexia evaluations
- Directly supervise and oversee the evaluation and 504 program, including goal setting, performance appraisal, and ongoing coaching and leadership development
- Oversee the provision of professional development activities for special education and 504 personnel related to evaluation and dyslexia services
- Communicate with campus administration to review data related to evaluation statistics, needs and support
- Facilitate implementation and effectiveness of specially designed instruction and related services for assigned campuses
- Evaluate the effectiveness of services and recommend improvements to meet the needs of the special education and 504 program
- Collect, compile, and analyze data for program evaluation
- Facilitate implementation, monitor effectiveness, and provide ongoing monitoring of the evaluation system for special education, 504, and dyslexia programs
- Act as a liaison between the Special Ed/504 District Departments and individual campuses to coordinate support plans based on evaluation data
- Organize campus‑requested support and monitor its implementation and effectiveness
- Plan and provide professional development activities for special education personnel, 504 staff, district administration, and campus administration
- Update and maintain written guidelines for Special Education and 504 administrative procedures
- Oversee and monitor compliance data related to SPP indicators 11 and 12, and snapshot/PEIMS data for special education and dyslexia/504
- Assist with TEA complaints, due process hearings, grievances, and participate in resolution meetings related to evaluation issues
- Other duties as assigned
- Assist in recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring of assigned staff
- Initiate personnel actions, including documentation and termination under guidance of Human Resources
- Recommend personnel actions including transfer and discipline of assigned personnel
- Perform performance appraisal of assigned Program Managers and Administrative Assistants
- Address complaints and resolve problems
- Assume responsibilities of the Director in the absence of the Director of Special Education
- Master's degree in Education or a related field
- Valid Special Education Certification preferred
- Licensure by the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists as a School Psychologist
- Minimum of 3 years district‑level leadership experience in Special Education
- Proficient with Windows operating system and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
The work is performed in classrooms, offices, workstations, and meeting rooms, requiring occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or carrying items weighing less than 40 pounds. The position involves using hands and arms to handle objects, tools, or controls; talking or hearing; and specific vision requirements such as close vision and color vision. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required.
Work may involve prolonged or irregular hours and require maintaining emotional control under stress.
- The position requires travel to various campuses, conferences, and meetings statewide and out of state.
