High School: Professional School Counselor

Job Overview

The Professional School Counselor in High School will facilitate student achievement by developing and implementing a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program. Counseling services include helping students adapt to the school environment, plan educational and career goals, and overcome learning obstacles. They plan, schedule, organize, and deliver counseling activities consistent with student academic, career, and personal needs.

• Provide classroom guidance lessons for all grades, maintaining a monthly calendar of guidance activities.
• Develop and implement college and career readiness activities, including Schoo Links scope and sequence and Career Days/Fairs.
• Collaborate with teachers to design and deliver behavioral interventions.
• Counsel students individually or in groups, respond to crises, assist with transitions, and report student threats.
• Consult with stakeholders (teachers, parents, administrators, school psychologists, etc.) and identify appropriate community resources.
• Assist staff with referrals to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and respond to requests for additional info.
• Provide one‑on‑one counseling on problem solving, study skills, relationships, decision making, academic growth, communication skills, social behavior, career exploration, scholarships, financial aid, and post‑secondary placement.
• Participate in campus team meetings (instructional support teams, 504, ARDs, Gifted and Talented) and consult on student needs.
• Assist with gifted program testing, interpret standardized test data, and develop realistic goals for students, including Accelerated Instructional Plans (AIPs) and Personal Graduation Plans (PGPs).
• Guide students in course selection, endorsements, 4‑year high school plans, and credit‑recovery options.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress toward graduation, interpret transfer records, provide transition services, and collect student data.
• Offer direction, consultation, and training for teachers, parents, and staff on classroom/student management, social/emotional development, teacher‑parent communication, and college/career readiness.
• Contribute to district and campus leadership teams, manage the counseling webpage, and support campus programs and special events.
• Research district policy and stay professionally current through staff development opportunities.

• Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling or related field.
• Texas School Counselor Certification or eligibility for Texas Certification; eligible to transfer Out‑of‑State School Counselor Certification.
• Minimum of 2 years of classroom teaching experience (preferred).
• Demonstrated integrity and ethics.
• Proficient in technology applications.
• Effective time management and punctuality.
• Strong communication skills (email, written, verbal).
• Cooperative with coworkers and supervisors.

The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting items weighing less than 40 pounds. Regular use of hands, reaching, talking, and hearing. Occasional travel to conferences and professional development. Work may involve irregular hours and emotional demands.
