Utilities Operator

The City of Sugar Land is seeking a full‑time Operator in the Groundwater division of the Utilities Department.

Groundwater Operator I & II:

• Responsible for the daily inspection and operation of the City’s groundwater facilities (groundwater plants, groundwater wells, and elevated storage tanks)
• Understands the water treatment process, proper chemical addition and reactions, and adheres to process targets to maintain proper operation of facilities; the City owns and operates both chloramine and free chlorine public water systems
• Assists and cooperates with contractors and staff in other City departments during rehabilitation and upgrade capital improvement projects
• Assists as required with water treatment chemical orders and deliveries; accompanies vendors to plants to ensure deliveries are conducted properly, safely, and accurately

Groundwater Operator III:

• Performs groundwater duties in a lead capacity; expected to lead, coordinate, and guide the activities of the team, as requested by the Groundwater Field Supervisor
• Records and logs daily inspection data including well production, plant flows, pump hour readings, chemical usage, and water quality test results at all groundwater facilities; logs data in both hardcopy and electronic formats
• Understands the water treatment process, proper chemical addition and reactions, and adheres to process targets to maintain proper operation of facilities; the City owns and operates both chloramine and free chlorine public water systems
• Proficient in the use of the Utility’s SCADA program to monitor and control groundwater facility processes and equipment

Additional duties for all positions:

• Work involves evening, weekends and holidays, overtime and on‑call on a rotation basis
• Required to work as an essential employee before, during and after an emergency or disaster, including hurricanes
• Performs any other duties and responsibilities as directed by management

• High school diploma or GED certification

• Two (2) years of experience in groundwater operations, maintenance, and repair or one (1) year of direct experience at the City of Sugar Land groundwater plants
• Municipal experience preferred

• Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License
• Class “C” Groundwater Operator certification by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) required
