Role

Responsible for the origination of mortgage and real‑estate loans for members and prospective members. Conducts initial pre‑qualification and prepares complete loan application packages and necessary documentation. Communicates policies for extension of credit in accordance with Credit Union and secondary investor guidelines. Adheres to documentation requirements, and production expectations as determined by the VP of Mortgage and Chief Lending Officer. Addresses and responds to members and prospective members promptly and professionally.

Provides general Credit Union information and cross‑selling services. Ensures compliance with applicable federal regulations and credit union policies. Complies with SAFE Act legislation, requiring annual Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) registration.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Originates first and second mortgage and real‑estate loans from members. Explains the credit union’s mortgage and real‑estate programs and aids in the selection of mortgage products. Reviews loan conditions with borrowers and collects required documentation in conjunction with the mortgage processor.
  • Manages personal loan pipeline and communicates loan status to borrowers, and related parties such as real estate agents, builders, etc., and follows up appropriately with leads and applications.
  • Identifies opportunities and assists in introducing borrower to branch personnel to expand the relationship beyond the mortgage loan.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with other employees to provide mortgage knowledge and generate application referrals.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.
Performance Measurements
  • Members‑owners and credit union partner‑employees must receive a consistently superior level of service and attention. Members inquiring about a mortgage should receive a follow‑up telephone call or e‑mail within one business day of their initial inquiry.
  • Loan applications are properly followed up upon and processed legally and compliantly, meeting all state and Federal regulations. All pre‑approval applications where the property is to be determined should be followed up on in a timely manner, not to exceed every 30 days, and proper notes should be recorded in the loan origination system.
Knowledge and Skills Experience

Minimum of two years previous experience originating first and second lien mortgage and real‑estate loans is required. Experience with Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac or FHLB is required. Experience with FHA, VA and USDA preferred.

Education
  • A two‑year college degree or (2) Completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or (3) Completion of a specialized and extensive in‑house training or apprenticeship program.
Interpersonal Skills

A significant level of trust and diplomacy is required, in addition to normal courtesy and tact. Work involves extensive personal contact with others and is usually of a personal or sensitive nature. Work may involve motivating, influencing or training others. Outside contacts become important and fostering sound relationships with other entities (companies and/or individuals) becomes necessary and often requires the ability to influence and/or sell ideas or services to others.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, including the ability to share negative information in a positive manner. Strong ability to build effective relationships with branch staff, builders and real‑estate agents.

Other Skills
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and utilize the necessary software to complete job functions, especially Credit Union’s mortgage end loan origination and processing systems, along with third‑party websites.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and analyze information in order to review credit reports, automated underwriting decisions, and other mortgage related documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to federal and state regulations/laws.
  • Demonstrated basic knowledge of Microsoft office products.
  • National Mortgage Lending System registration required to be in compliance with the SAFE Act.
