Job Summary
The Supplemental Occupational Therapist assesses patients and develops a treatment plan based on evaluation results. The evaluation may include measurement of physical, cognitive, perceptual and developmental skills as they relate to maximizing independence in occupational performance across the continuum of life. The incumbent documents findings, tracks progress, and provides instruction to patients and caregivers.
Minimum Qualifications- Education:
Bachelor's or graduate degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited university‑based program. - License:
Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners license required. - Experience:
One year of experience preferred. - Demonstrates ability and willingness to mentor/trainer staff or supervise clinical interns.
- Provides clinical leadership and expertise for a specific patient population or enhances an existing clinical program.
- Serves as a clinical resource for hospital or departmental committees and initiates or leads ongoing departmental interest groups.
- Designs and implements staff development programs that improve clinical competencies of other staff members.
- Ability to lift 75-100 pounds occasionally to frequently, carry up to 30 pounds, stand prolonged, walk, stoop, squat, and perform fine hand dexterity and eye‑hand coordination tasks.
- Requires oral, written, and visual communication, and ability to monitor instruments, computers, and equipment.
- Committed to flexible scheduling and to moving within patient‑care areas when necessary.
- Assumes responsibility for patient care and performs comprehensive evaluations with physician referrals.
- Interprets evaluation findings accurately and writes a written plan of care that sets goals and outlines a comprehensive program to attain those goals.
- Implements treatment programs and provides advanced occupational therapy treatments.
- Demonstrates competency in advanced occupational therapy skills.
- Assesses patients periodically, monitors progress toward goals, and modifies goals, plans, or programs as needed.
- Supervises assistants and rehabilitation technicians regarding patient care.
- Motivates and instructs patients/caregivers using appropriate methods.
- Communicates effectively with patients, caregivers, physicians, insurance companies, and colleagues.
- Manages time efficiently and documents care accurately in the medical record.
- Provides clinical resources to staff, the hospital, community, and departmental committees.
- Acts as a clinical instructor for OT and OTA interns.
- Assists with program development and supervision of support staff within the department.
- Demonstrates expertise in treating a particular patient population.
- Participates actively in community service functions as a professional representative.
- Presents special topics in professional literature at clinic meetings, grand rounds, conferences, university settings, and faculty‑requested meetings.
- Ensures patient, staff, and visitor safety and adheres to all policies and standards, including time management, supply, productivity, and quality of service.
- Supports professional growth and development by meeting mandatory/continuing education and competency requirements and by serving as preceptor, mentor, and resource to less experienced staff.
- Provides compassionate, personalized experiences to patients and colleagues in line with organizational standards.
