Position Summary

The Senior Payroll Manager is responsible for overseeing day‑to‑day payroll operations to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant payroll processing. This role leads payroll staff, manages operational workflows, and partners cross‑functionally with HR, Finance, and Benefits to deliver a high‑quality employee payroll experience.

Key Responsibilities Payroll Operations
  • Manage end‑to‑end payroll processing across all pay cycles (weekly, biweekly, semi‑monthly)
  • Review and approve payroll registers, tax filings, and reconciliations
  • Ensure accurate processing of wages, bonuses, commissions, equity, and deductions
  • Oversee off‑cycle payrolls, adjustments, and retroactive payments
Compliance & Controls
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage and tax regulations
  • Maintain payroll documentation, audit trails, and internal controls
  • Support internal and external audits, including year‑end and tax audits
  • Monitor regulatory changes and implement required operational updates
Team Leadership
  • Lead, coach, and develop payroll staff
  • Assign workloads, set priorities, and ensure coverage for payroll cycles
  • Conduct performance reviews and support professional development
Systems & Process Improvement
  • Administer payroll systems and ensure data integrity
  • Partner with HRIS and IT on system updates, testing, and integrations
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and automation
Cross‑Functional Partnership
  • Collaborate with HR, Finance, Benefits, and Accounting on payroll‑related matters
  • Serve as escalation point for complex employee payroll issues
  • Support compensation, benefits, and finance initiatives requiring payroll expertise
Specific Qualifications
  • 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including people management
  • Hands‑on experience processing payroll in‑house, not solely managing or submitting payroll to third‑party providers (i.e. ADP)
  • Strong knowledge of payroll tax, wage and hour laws, and payroll accounting
  • Experience with enterprise payroll systems (e.g., Workday, ADP, UKG)
  • Proven ability to manage deadlines in a high‑volume environment
  • Processing multi‑state payroll and tax
