Job Description
Fragomen is seeking a Database Engineer (DBE) to join the Database Engineering team within Technology & Innovation. This role is responsible for the reliability, performance, automation, and modernization of SQL Server platforms across on-premises and cloud-integrated environments.
The Database Engineer will partner closely with Reporting, BI, Infrastructure, and Platform teams to standardize operational processes, improve performance, reduce technical debt, and support enterprise-critical database workloads.
Database Platform Engineering & Operations- Own and operate enterprise SQL Server environments across production and non-production tiers.
- Standardize and automate database operational workflows, including script execution intake, monitoring, and deployment processes.
- Participate in patching, deployment, and release management activities to ensure platform security and stability.
- Provide on-call and incident response support for mission-critical database systems.
- Diagnose and resolve complex SQL Server performance issues including blocking, deadlocks, replication latency, and high-write workloads.
- Analyze and tune slow-running queries and reports.
- Lead index analysis, consolidation, and cleanup initiatives to reduce write overhead, improve performance.
- Use DMVs, custom tooling, and historical metrics to proactively identify performance risks.
- Gather and maintain configuration data across all SQL Server instances, including versioning, hardware, storage, network, and security settings.
- Evaluate environments against SQL Server best practices and implement improvements related to performance, security, and reliability.
- Develop and maintain standardized SQL Server configuration templates.
- Design and implement automation to reduce manual DBE effort and improve consistency.
- Develop scripts and frameworks to manage recurring operational tasks, compliance checks, and configuration validation.
- Support migrations off legacy SQL Server versions, including SQL Server 2016.
- Evaluate, implement, and support newer SQL Server versions (including SQL Server 2025).
- Support source control migrations and database deployment standardization efforts.
- Assist in modernization initiatives involving Microsoft Fabric and Power BI where database platform integration is required.
- Participate in technical design and operational decision-making.
- Build reliable, repeatable, and supportable database solutions.
- Apply strong engineering discipline to scripting, deployments, and automation.
- Collaborate effectively across teams in a fast-paced environment.
Required
- 6+ years of experience administering and supporting SQL Server environments.
- Strong expertise in T‑SQL, SQL Server performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Hands‑on experience with automation and scripting for database operations.
- Experience supporting reporting and analytics workloads.
- Strong understanding of SQL Server architecture, indexing, and security.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and Power BI integrations.
- Experience supporting cloud or hybrid environments (AWS, Azure).
- Exposure to No
SQL platforms such as Couchbase.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
- Strong operational ownership and accountability.
- Solid understanding of SDLC and controlled change management.
