Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions as a licensed registered nurse and care provider. This role involves diagnosing, treating, and consulting on patient care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, while promoting patient health and well‑being.
The NP collaborates with the interprofessional health care team, provides patient education, conducts physicals, orders tests, and prescribes medications as appropriate under the Nurse Practice Act of Texas.

Qualifications Education- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing and graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
- Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience
- Registered Nurse (RN) - Texas State Licensure
- Texas Board of Nursing; PSV Compact Licensure – must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days (if establishing Texas residency) - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Non‑Acute Care state license
- Non‑Acute Care ANCC‑recognized certification
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Instructor certification (AHA)
- Prescriptive Authority (AP) - Texas Board of Nursing
- Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation; PSV - DEA Narcotics License within 6 months
- Demonstrated skills and competencies for safe practice, assessed through ongoing evaluations
- Proficient English reading, writing, and speaking for essential job functions
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, families, and co‑workers using customer‑service language principles
- Highly developed assessment, clinical documentation, leadership, and analytical skills
- Therapeutic communication to establish relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team
- Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities, prioritizing multiple tasks
- Independent judgment in interactions with physicians, the care team, and families
- Proficient time‑management skills
- Critical thinking and clinical judgment to work autonomously as defined by the Nurse Practice Act
- Serve as a clinical resource, consultant, and patient advocate; identify staff development opportunities and provide coaching
- Communicate organizational information and practice details respectfully and positively; promote balanced workload and peer accountability
- Collaborate with the interprofessional team to manage patient care and advocate for patients and families
- Promote teamwork, serve as a role model, coach staff, and preceptor for NP students or medical residents; support department engagement scores
- Coordinate timely patient care under physician supervision for defined populations, focusing on unit/optimal outcomes and individualized care
- Coordinate patient care among providers; attend and participate in interprofessional rounds
- Contribute to improving department patient‑satisfaction scores through peer accountability and service standards
- Provide quality care, maintain and promote patient health, and assist the team in developing and implementing safety protocols
- Conduct health assessments (initial, ongoing, discharge) and develop care plans with appropriate interventions and outcomes evaluation
- Perform invasive, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures as allowed by licensure and credentials
- Lead and initiate improvement activities that align with patient safety and organizational goals
- Apply department strategies to achieve financial targets; mentor others by timely documentation, reducing length of stay, and optimizing efficiency
- Demonstrate awareness of resource allocation based on patient needs and staff expertise
- Promote quality care through integration of current research and participation in evidence‑based activities
- Identify opportunities for practice change and performance improvement; educate staff and support individual career development
