Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) functions as a licensed registered nurse and healthcare provider, delivering comprehensive patient care—including diagnosis, treatment, consultation, and prescribing medications—across inpatient and outpatient settings. The NP works within the Nurse Practice Act of Texas, collaborates with the interprofessional team, models compassionate communication, and promotes preventative health for patients.

QUALIFICATIONS Education- Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school of Nursing and graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioners program
- Two years of registered nurse, advanced practice, or nurse practitioner clinical experience
- RN – Registered Nurse – Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Compact Licensure (must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing Texas residency)
- APRN – Non‑Acute Care state license
- Non‑Acute Care ANCC–recognized certification
- BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association
- AP – Prescriptive Authority – Texas Board of Nursing – Texas Department of Licensing and
- DEA – Narcotics License (DEA) – Drug Enforcement (within 6 months)
- Demonstrated competency in skills necessary to safely perform the role, as evaluated through ongoing assessments
- Proficient in English language for all essential functions, especially those affecting safety
- Effective communication with patients, physicians, family, and coworkers, applying a customer‑service focus and positive language principles
- Highly developed assessment, clinical documentation, leadership, and analytical skills
- Therapeutic communication to build relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional team

- Lead as a clinical resource, interprofessional consultant, and patient advocate; coach staff toward professional growth
- Communicate organizational information and administrative/clinical practices respectfully and positively; promote balanced workload and team accountability
- Collaborate with the interprofessional healthcare team to manage/coordinate patient care and address clinical/ethical concerns
- Foster healthy workplace relationships; serve as preceptor for NP students and medical residents, as applicable, and work toward improved employee engagement scores
- Coordinate timely patient care under physician supervision for a defined patient population, prioritizing based on needs, abilities, and preferences
- Coordinate patient care between providers and participate in interprofessional rounds as appropriate
- Drive improvement of patient satisfaction scores through peer‑to‑peer accountability to service standards
- Provide quality care, maintain, and promote patient health; assist in developing and implementing safety protocols
- Conduct health assessments, identify characteristics, develop care plans, initiate interventions, and evaluate outcomes for patient populations
- Perform invasive, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures within licensure and credentialed privileges
- Lead and initiate outcome, quality, and safety improvement activities aligning with organizational goals
- Implement department strategies to meet financial targets, mentor others, and focus on timely documentation, reduced length of stay, and efficiency improvements
- Understand and apply resource allocation based on patient needs and staff experience
- Promote quality healthcare through integrating current research into practice and participating in evidence‑based activities
- Identify opportunities for practice changes and performance improvement; educate staff in research, presentations, and publications; maintain a development plan with management
