WAN/LAN SME Position
The WAN/LAN SME is responsible for the engineering, modernization, scalability, performance, and operational sustainability of enterprise network services spanning wide area networks (WAN), local area networks (LAN), cloud connectivity, data centers, remote sites, and hybrid environments. The role serves as the senior technical authority for network transport, routing, switching, network services, and connectivity architecture, ensuring secure, resilient, and high-performing communications across the enterprise.
The WAN/LAN SME designs and implements network solutions that support organizational growth, cloud adoption, remote locations, content delivery requirements, and evolving mission demands. The individual works closely with cloud, security, infrastructure, application, and operations teams to develop network strategies, evaluate technologies, troubleshoot complex issues, optimize network performance, and guide the implementation of enterprise networking standards based on Cisco technologies and industry best practices.
Responsibilities
- Design, engineer, and optimize enterprise WAN, LAN, campus, branch, remote-site, cloud, and hybrid network environments.
- Lead WAN modernization initiatives, including bandwidth expansion, circuit optimization, carrier integration, SD-WAN adoption, and network performance improvements.
- Design and maintain enterprise routing architectures utilizing BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, policy-based routing, route redistribution, and high-availability networking strategies.
- Develop scalable connectivity solutions supporting AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, SaaS providers, colocation facilities, and hosted service environments.
- Engineer secure network connectivity between on-premises environments, cloud providers, partner organizations, and remote locations.
- Design and support Cisco-based switching, routing, wireless, and network services infrastructure deployed across enterprise and remote sites.
- Evaluate network utilization, traffic patterns, latency, throughput, and application performance to identify capacity constraints and support long-term growth planning.
- Develop network architectures supporting content delivery, application acceleration, load balancing, DNS services, edge networking, and user experience optimization.
- Perform network assessments, technical analyses, root-cause investigations, and remediation planning for complex enterprise network challenges.
- Support network security requirements through segmentation, access control, zero-trust integration, network monitoring, and secure connectivity architectures.
- Create and maintain network diagrams, implementation plans, standards, engineering documentation, configuration baselines, and operational runbooks.
- Provide senior-level technical leadership, mentoring, architecture reviews, and engineering guidance to network operations and infrastructure teams.
