The Onsite Waste Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the proper handling, storage, documentation, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste generated within a petrochemical or refinery environment. This role serves as the central point of contact between plant operations, transportation teams, and disposal vendors both internal and third party, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient waste handling while supporting ongoing projects, shutdowns, and routine operations.
PRINCIPALRESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations, including Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), and state/local environmental agencies Maintain working knowledge of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requirements: 90-day accumulation rules, Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA) management, Waste determination and proper coding. Perform routine inspections of accumulation areas (e.g., Satellite Accumulation Areas and 90-day storage areas) and correct deficiencies in real time Ensure proper labeling, marking, placarding and container management of all waste streams Coordinate collection, consolidation, and storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste Verify waste compatibility and proper container selection Monitor waste volumes and schedule timely shipments to avoid regulatory violations Support spill response and incident investigations related to waste handling Provide hands‑on support during critical operations (cleanouts, spills, high-volume events) Ensure proper segregation to prevent reactions or compliance issues Prepare and review hazardous waste manifests, Bill of Lading (BOL) documentation Track waste from “cradle to grave” ensuring proper documentation and signatures Maintain accurate, audit‑ready logs of waste generation, storage times, and disposal records at all times Ensure Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) documentation is complete and accurate Ensure accuracy in waste profiles and disposal approvals Serve as the primary liaison between:
Plant Personal, Waste Vendors and Transporters, Environmental and Compliance Teams Schedule shipments, pickups, and container swaps Verify transporter compliance and proper placarding/packaging prior to shipment Support program improvements (e.g., total waste solutions initiatives) Train site personnel on proper waste handling, labeling, and emergency procedures Provide guidance to operations teams on waste minimization and segregation Assist with internal and external environmental audits Promote a strong safety culture and adherence to PPE requirements Identify opportunities for waste reduction and recycling initiatives Ensure proper management of universal waste, used oil, and recyclable materials
Strong understanding of RCRA, DOT hazardous materials regulations, and waste codes Familiarity with manifests, LDRs, and waste profiling Excellent organizational and recordkeeping skills Ability to communicate effectively with operations teams and vendors Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Teams) High school diploma or GED required Sampling, labeling, material handling and over packing required, lab packing experience a plus Forklift experience required, backhoe and skid steer experience preferred Ability to lift, manage and handle up to 50lbs throughout the course of a workday Respirator fit tested or the ability to obtain
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS2 years of relevant experience working in the waste disposal industry Ability to pass Respirator fit test certification Ability to regularly lift or move object weighting 50lbs or more Currently hold or ability to obtain a forklift certification within the first 90 days of employment
