Line/Ground Worker
The Line/Ground Worker provides hands-on support to telecommunications construction, installation, maintenance, and repair crews. This position performs general ground and field work and assists with the installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of fiber optic and related telecommunications infrastructure.
The Line/Ground Worker assists crew members with tools, equipment, materials, work-site preparation, cable placement, construction activities, and traffic control. The position is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment and following all company safety policies and procedures.
This position requires the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, perform physically demanding work, travel to various job sites, and follow written and verbal instructions.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist line and construction crews with the installation, maintenance, repair, and removal of telecommunications facilities.
- Assist with the placement, handling, securing, and preparation of fiber optic cable, conduit, poles, hardware, and other construction materials.
- Prepare and maintain work areas for construction and maintenance activities.
- Assist with digging, trenching, boring, pulling cable, back filling, and other ground-related construction activities as directed.
- Load, unload, transport, and organize tools, materials, and equipment at job sites.
- Safely operate hand tools and other equipment for which the employee has been trained and authorized.
- Assist with setting up and maintaining traffic control, work-zone signage, cones, barriers, and other safety equipment as required.
- Assist with locating and identifying underground utilities and other existing infrastructure.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the workday.
- Properly secure tools, materials, equipment, and work areas at the completion of work.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable OSHA requirements.
- Follow instructions from supervisors and experienced line and construction personnel.
- Promptly report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, property damage, accidents, injuries, and near misses.
- Perform basic maintenance and care of company tools, vehicles, and equipment as assigned.
- Work cooperatively with crew members, contractors, property owners, customers, and other personnel encountered in the field.
- Assist with emergency restoration and service outage activities, including work outside of normal business hours when required.
- Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous construction, telecommunications, utility, electrical, or general labor experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability to safely use basic hand tools and equipment.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record may be required.
- Ability to successfully complete required pre-employment screening and meet company safety requirements.
- Ability and willingness to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
- Ability and willingness to travel to assigned job sites as required.
Physical Requirements & Work Conditions
This is primarily a field-based position. Work is performed outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, cold, rain, dust, noise, uneven terrain, traffic, construction equipment, and other field conditions. Employees are expected to use all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with established safety requirements.
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Physical requirements may include:
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders and access job-site locations as required.
- Ability to work around and near construction equipment, vehicles, overhead utilities, underground utilities, and other field hazards.
- Ability to work in confined areas, hand holes, or similar locations when required by assigned duties and properly trained to do so.
- Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks and use hand tools for extended periods.
- Ability to work safely at heights or around elevated work areas when required and properly trained.
- Willingness to travel to job sites throughout the assigned service area, including rural and remote locations.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs when required.
Safety Responsibilities
