Overview

The Rental Shop Technician Apprentice is responsible for performing jobs involving servicing and repair of all types of mechanical, hydraulic and diesel-powered equipment, working both independently and on a team. On-the-job training, classroom instruction, and e-learning will ensure that skills remain current. The Technician will demonstrate initiative, commitment to teamwork, enthusiasm for customer service, and dedication to finding solutions in an efficient manner.

Program Structure
  • Start: March 2026
  • Duration: Approx. 6 months
  • Academic Learning: 1 week in class, 3 weeks in shop.
  • Outcome: Entry level technician role
Responsibilities
  • Contributes to a positive work environment and promotes the vision, mission and values of BMC.
  • Completes all job responsibilities in a safe manner, promotes and champions a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Performs rental turns and preventive maintenance on rental fleet.
  • Inspects equipment for damage and operational functions; changes oil filters; lube equipment; and replaces parts on rental equipment.
  • Reads and uses maintenance manuals to assist in repairs.
  • Follows equipment repair priority list as established by the Service Supervisor.
  • Maintains a clean, well‑organized workstation.
  • Completes quality control service tags when inspecting rental equipment ensuring all units inspected have tag attached.
  • Assists other technicians, washes equipment, and assists customers with loading and unloading of equipment.
  • Engages in both academic and practical assessments to demonstrate skill development.
  • Attends all technical classes and completes all apprenticeship assessments.
  • Diagnoses and repairs Caterpillar systems in designated field.
  • Engages in both academic and practical assessments to demonstrate skill development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Performance Expectations:

  • Successful completion of technical requirements of the apprenticeship program.
  • Effective application of learned skills during the program.
  • Adherence to all program requirements and standards set by Blanchard Machinery.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must pass Blanchard Machinery Criteria Assessment Tool.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques and proper repair procedures preferred.
  • Able to read and interpret electrical and hydraulic schematics, operating and maintenance service manuals preferred.
  • Working knowledge of equipment operation and associated operating systems.
  • Ability to operate lifting devices.
  • Ability to use diagnostic equipment.
  • Familiarization of electronic cables, connections, and sensors.
  • A demonstrated commitment to accuracy, organization and ability to prioritize tasks is required.
  • Previous experience on CAT equipment is a plus.
  • Meet Company Driver Qualifications policy.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license.
Working Conditions
  • The physical environment requires the employee to work both inside (non‑climate controlled) and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to injury and/or hazardous materials.
  • Requires standing, stooping, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, turning, lifting.
  • Physical use of a broad variety of tools and machines in order to maintain, troubleshoot and repair equipment.
  • Must be able to lift varied weight.
  • Seeing, reading, and writing to complete job responsibilities.
  • Use of computers and other forms of technology to complete job responsibilities.
