Position Overview
Applicants must possess a current Washington State Peace Officer Certification. Exceptional entry candidates differ from lateral officer candidates based on time of service and experience level.
City establishes an Initial Eligibility List.
2026 Pay Range: $45.61 - $58.36 per hour plus potential for education premiums.
Incentive Bonus- $10,000 hiring bonus paid in two increments (50% at hire and 50% upon successful completion of probationary period)
- Must be in good standing or otherwise eligible for rehire by former agency.
- Must possess a current WSCJTC Peace Officer Certification or meet the out of state equivalency requirements of WAC .

This position is a full‑time Fair Labor Standards Act position. The incumbent is a Civil Service employee. This position is eligible for representation through the Police Guild.
Police Officer Position Hiring Levels- Entry Level Police Officer: 0 years’ experience as a fully commissioned law officer.
- Exceptional Entry Police Officer: less than two years’ experience as a fully commissioned law officer, with no more than a 24 month break in service.
- Lateral Police Officer: two or more years’ experience as a fully commissioned law officer, with no more than a 24 month break in service.
Sumner is a small city with over ten thousand residents and rich agricultural roots. Known as the Rhubarb Pie Capital of the World, it has a walkable downtown and strong ties to the Puget Sound region. It offers manufacturing and distribution jobs from companies such as REI, Keurig Green Mountain, Amazon and Dillanos Coffee Roasters. The city has a downtown Sound Transit station and the largest YMCA facility in Washington state.
Sumner’s city government includes a cemetery, wastewater treatment facility, police department, parks, public works and administration.
Performs a variety of duties related to the suppression and prevention of crime, protection of life and property, and preservation of public peace. Responsible for the enforcement of laws and for giving aid and information to citizens in the community.

EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities include:
- Patrol designated areas of the City, either in whole or in part, during an assigned shift, to preserve law and order, prevent and discover the commission of crime, and enforce Federal, State and City of Sumner laws and regulations.
- Answer calls and complaints involving traffic accidents, domestic situations, robberies and other misdemeanors, disturbances, and felonies; take necessary police action.
- Observe, report and act on conditions conducive to crime and danger; check buildings for security; observe residences, schools, sports fields, banks and vacant areas; check suspicious persons and vehicles.
- Issue infractions and citations, make arrests, transport persons taken into custody, or take other action as appropriate under the circumstances.
- Prepare all forms, reports and follow‑up reports necessary to file felony and/or misdemeanor charges.
- Prepare criminal cases for prosecution with either the City or County Prosecutor; interact with prosecutors, attorneys and court officials; testify in court as required.
- Conduct preliminary investigations at the scenes of crimes and accidents; gather evidence; locate and question witnesses; testify as a witness in court.
- Patrol an area of the City as directed in a patrol vehicle, bicycle or on foot; interview witnesses and/or complaints; collect material evidence and perform crime scene work; perform surveillance; apprehend, interview and arrest suspects; prepare and submit reports; assist other jurisdictions and agencies; participate in undercover investigation of narcotics, gambling, vice and other activities, violations and…
