Police Officer, Legal Counsel
This position is a full-time, Fair Labor Standards Act position in the City of Sumner Police Department. The incumbent will serve as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer and is eligible for representation through the Police Guild.
Pay and Benefits2026 Pay Range: $45.61–$58.36 per hour plus potential education premiums.
Benefits include a Regence High Deductible Medical Plan, Delta Dental coverage at 100% for eligible employees and families, VSP vision plan, long‑term disability, life insurance ($50,000 or $80,000 for police), deferred compensation 457(b) with city contributions, and a retirement plan (PERS for all except police, who are on the DRS LEOFF2 plan).
Job OverviewPerform a variety of duties related to the suppression and prevention of crime, protection of life and property, and maintenance of public peace. Enforce laws and provide assistance and information to citizens.
Responsibilities- Patrol designated areas of the city during assigned shifts to preserve law and order and prevent crime.
- Respond to calls and complaints involving accidents, domestic situations, robberies, misdemeanors, disturbances, and felonies; take necessary police action.
- Observe, report, and act on conditions conducive to crime and danger; check buildings, residences, schools, banks, and vacant areas; investigate suspicious persons and vehicles.
- Issue infractions and citations, make arrests, transport persons in custody, or take other appropriate action.
- Prepare all required reports and follow‑up documentation for felony and misdemeanor cases.
- Prepare criminal cases for prosecution, interact with prosecutors, attorneys, and court officials; testify in court when required.
- Conduct preliminary investigations at crime and accident scenes; gather evidence, locate and question witnesses, and testify as a witness.
- Conduct surveillance and undercover investigations as directed; may be called at any time for emergency duties.
- Perform community liaison activities, educate the public on crime prevention, and direct citizens to appropriate authorities.
- Serve civil process issued by courts, including restraining orders, subpoenas, and warrants.
- Assist in training new personnel, providing non‑emergency assistance, and performing booking or dispatch support as needed.
Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Two years’ experience as a fully commissioned law enforcement officer with no more than a 24‑month break in service.
- Successful graduation from the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy or an equivalency program.
- Current Washington State Peace Officer Certification; must remain in good standing.
- Minimum age of 21 years.
- Valid Washington State driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Pass a background check and all training requirements prescribed by the Department.
- Comprehensive understanding of federal, state, county, and city laws, regulations, and ordinances.
- Proficiency in first aid, CPR, and safe use of firearms and other police tools.
- Physical fitness to meet or exceed tests such as the Cooper Test.
- Ability to communicate effectively, maintain composure under pressure, and collaborate with various agencies.
Must be in good standing or otherwise eligible for rehire by a former agency.
