CNC Machinist

The CNC Machinist operates and sets up 3- and 4-axis vertical and horizontal CNC mills in a predominantly sheet metal machining environment. Machines run off Master Cam software and utilize controls such as Haas and Fanuc. This role supports both commercial and defense contracts, contributing to a fast-growing, cash-positive operation. The position is on a swing shift with a 4/10 schedule, focusing on precision machining, inspection, and adherence to quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities
  • Operate 3- and 4-axis vertical and horizontal CNC mills to machine sheet metal components according to engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Follow verbal machine operation instructions from department leads and review drawings and manufacturing planning to understand machining requirements.
  • Set up machines by installing pallets, vises, tombstones, and fixtures, and carefully load parts into machines for production runs.
  • Operate machine control panels to run programs, monitor operations, unload parts, deburr components, and arrange finished parts in boxes or on pallets, including occasionally running two machines at once.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, manuals, tool setups, and sample parts to determine dimensions, tolerances, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measure and mark dimensions and reference points on material or work pieces as guides for subsequent machining operations.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and height gauges to monitor features and dimensions on each component run and verify conformance to requirements.
  • Monitor machining processes to detect equipment malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions and adjust machine controls, offsets, or control media within capabilities to maintain quality.
  • Report all machine malfunctions and significant process issues to the department lead in a timely manner.
  • Support supervisors in running production parts, proving programs, operating controls, setting offsets, deburring, and inspecting quality parts to meet production and quality targets.
  • Perform deburring of finished parts to meet surface finish and safety requirements before packaging or further processing.
  • Keep equipment and work areas clean and orderly, consistently leaving the workstation in better condition than found and performing basic preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Apply basic math, geometry, and trigonometry to calculate dimensions, offsets, and machining parameters as needed for accurate part production.
  • Adhere to and comply with all applicable state and federal laws, company quality programs and procedures, company policies, and safety and environmental regulations.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management to support production, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Skills
  • Hands-on experience operating 3- and 4-axis vertical and horizontal CNC mills.
  • Proficiency with CNC machining in a sheet metal environment, with the ability to work in a shop where the majority of work is sheet metal machining.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, specifications, and GD&T.
  • Skilled in using precision measuring tools including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and height gauges.
  • Capability to set up CNC machines, including installing pallets, vises, tombstones, and fixtures.
  • Competence in following verbal instructions from leads and translating manufacturing planning and drawings into machining actions.
  • Strong attention to detail in monitoring features and dimensions on each component and ensuring parts meet tolerance requirements.
  • Ability to detect equipment malfunctions and out-of-tolerance machining and make appropriate adjustments within machine capabilities.
  • Basic math, geometry, and trigonometry skills to support accurate machining and setup.
  • Ability to deburr parts effectively and handle finished components safely and efficiently.
  • Commitment to maintaining a clean, organized work area and performing basic preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Willingness and ability to comply with company quality programs, policies, and safety and…
