Overview
The Tax Supervisor oversees all tax-related operations for the University, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations across payroll, financial, and regulatory reporting functions. This role serves as the primary subject matter expert on tax compliance, providing leadership, guidance, and oversight for payroll tax, institutional tax reporting, and complex tax-related transactions.
Responsibilities- Manage and monitor payroll tax activities, including processing tax adjustments (such as international and student FICA corrections), review liability accounts, and ensure accurate tax calculations and timely remittance of all federal and state payroll taxes.
- Oversee reconciliations between payroll and the general ledger, prepare and review journal entries, and ensure timely and accurate completion of monthly, quarterly, and year-end tax reporting.
- Ensure compliance with federal reporting requirements, including Section 117 foreign source reporting, by compiling, reviewing, and submitting required reports to the Department of Education.
- Provide oversight and guidance on complex tax matters such as employee reimbursements (moving and tuition), international taxation, executive compensation, Affordable Care Act compliance, and other institutional tax obligations.
- Lead tax compliance efforts by establishing and maintaining strong internal controls, responding to tax notices and audits, coordinating with external agencies, and ensuring accurate and timely filing of all required tax returns, including quarterly payroll tax filings.
- Interpret and implement regulatory changes, ensure proper system configuration within Workday, and drive process improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
- Supervise and develop assigned staff, including workload coordination, performance management, and training, while fostering a high-performing, service-oriented team.
- Collaborate with Payroll, Human Resources, Finance, and other departments to resolve complex issues and support institutional goals.
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field - Experience:
5–7 years in tax, payroll, or accounting, with supervisory experience - Knowledge:
Payroll tax compliance, federal/state regulations, and financial reporting - Systems:
Experience with ERP systems (Workday preferred) and strong Excel skills - Skills:
Analytical, detail-oriented, and able to interpret complex regulations - Leadership:
Ability to supervise staff and support process improvements
- Continuous or frequent requirements as listed (e.g., standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, vision, hearing) with the ability to perform job functions as described
- Ability to lift and carry up to 15 lbs. unassisted and to lift objects up to 15 lbs. from floor level to 36 inches; push/pull as needed
- Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, see close and distant objects, distinguish colors, and perceive depth
- Computer literacy required
