Job Responsibilities
Assist with inspecting daily work performed by contractors on highway and bridge construction projects across various disciplines including asphalt and concrete paving, earthwork and base construction, construction of concrete structures, work zone safety and traffic control, erosion control and prevention, and others. Notify contractor, direct supervisor or RCE of any onsite issues and help resolve conflicts appropriately. Thoroughly document daily construction activities and field measurements on standard inspection forms and field diaries.
Complete AASHTO-Ware project daily diaries, construction forms, and other related inspection reports. Assist with measurement, calculation, and recording quantities of installed contract pay items in the field. Take samples and perform various field tests on construction materials such as asphalt, concrete, and soil to ensure compliance with applicable specifications. Ensure materials are sampled and tested at the required frequency, and verify compliance of work with applicable specifications.
Obtain manufacturer certifications and other required quality control documents prior to installation or use of engineered construction materials, products, and devices.
Assist with the use of survey instruments, metering devices, tape measures, and test equipment to establish and maintain the required construction line and grade. Ensure that roadways and bridges are constructed within the limits established by contract and the SCDOT Construction Manual. Support the RCE and maintenance department with measurements of estimated quantities of pay items required on upcoming highway resurfacing and pavement preservation projects.
Qualifications- High school diploma or an approved acceptable equivalence.
- Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
The essential functions of this position involve sitting or standing at a desk for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, and kneeling. The position requires driving and walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and exposure to natural environmental hazards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
May be required to work outside normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather or departmental emergencies. The position may require exposure to outside environment in all weather conditions and noise.
May be required to work overtime, nighttime, and/or weekends during hazardous weather or emergencies.
