Liberty STEAM Charter is a tuition‑free, open‑enrollment public charter school located in Sumter, South Carolina. Opened in the Fall of 2021, the school currently serves 192 scholars in kindergarten and first grade and will expand to provide K‑12 education as additional grade levels are phased in, ensuring quality educational programming for all enrolled scholars.
This unique opportunity to open a new school offers founding staff autonomy and leadership opportunities. The school’s vision and mission are based on a general theory of action that emphasizes STEAM career fields through project‑based learning, personalized learning, rigorous academic content, and workplace learning experiences. Graduates will leave with the competencies necessary for success in college or career. The school will become a cradle‑to‑college/workforce pipeline in the Sumter community and an integral part of a holistic revitalization approach.
It is governed by a nine‑member Board of Directors that represents a cross‑section of the community. By leveraging innovative practices common to the nation’s top‑performing public schools, Liberty STEAM Charter is prepared to close the opportunity gap for all scholars. In addition to a project‑based learning approach that includes the STEAM curriculum, scholars receive a strong foundation in literacy to help define and achieve their dreams.
