JOB TITLE:

HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM TEACHER

Under limited supervision, employs classroom management techniques that create an environment for teaching and learning in which students understand their expectations. Provides instruction in the content areas assigned by the principal and reports directly to the Principal.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops and follows a prepared lesson plan that is sufficient for instruction.
  • Exercises proper care of materials and equipment.
  • Communicates classroom needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Adheres to assigned work hours, arriving on time and remaining until the end of the scheduled period.
  • Communicates effectively with staff, parents, students, and administration.
  • Accepts assistance, advice, and guidance from supervisors and actively seeks improvement.
  • Shares ideas, plans, materials, and facilities with colleagues.
  • Remains alert to district, school, and personal goals, seeking relevant professional development.
  • Maintains confidentiality of professional information unless disclosure serves a professional purpose or is required by law.
  • Respects rights, feelings, and differences among individuals, handling conflicts directly.
  • Complies with state and local restrictions regarding controlled substances, tobacco, alcohol, and dress.
  • Ensures students are free from verbal or physical harassment, profanity, and inappropriate contact.

    • The teacher begins the class promptly.

Planning for Instruction
  • Utilizes a clinical approach to teaching, diagnosing and prescribing evidence-based learning.

  • Gives clear learning objectives and purpose to students.
  • Links new learning to prior knowledge and verbalizes transfer.

  • Provides students with information about the learning content.
  • Demonstrates sound, up-to-date knowledge of the subject matter.
  • Checks student understanding periodically throughout the lesson.
  • Provides appropriate practice experiences to ensure mastery.
  • Monitors guided practice, giving immediate feedback on performance.
  • Applies reinforcement theory throughout the lesson.
  • Maintains a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Incorporates student interests into lesson activities.
  • Encourages, praises, and acknowledges student effort.
  • Ensures each student experiences measurable success.
  • Schedules practice to promote retention of learning.
  • Allows students to verbalize critical attributes before lesson conclusion.
  • Collects data to evaluate student performance and plan future lessons.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher; valid South Carolina teacher’s certificate in the assigned teaching area. The Board may accept appropriate alternatives.
