Position: Criminal Justice Training Instructor I (Range Unit)

The South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Range Unit, is seeking an instructor to research, develop, and deliver law enforcement firearm and driving training for basic and advanced students, officers, and other assigned groups.

Duties Include:
  • Prepare and deliver approved instruction on basic firearms safety, defensive driving, and related techniques.
  • Serve as a coach and safety officer during classroom, firearms range, and driving instruction.
  • Perform duties as either the primary or assistant instructor during firearms qualifications and emergency vehicle operations training.
  • Serve as the primary or assistant instructor for shotgun, moving target (mover), and incapacitation (INCAP) drills within the Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) program, evaluating and updating the course as needed.
  • Serve as the primary or assistant instructor for Basic Patrol Rifle and Patrol Rifle Instructor courses, evaluating and updating the course as needed.
  • Assist with the planning, preparation, delivery, and support of all Range Unit training programs as needed.
  • Ensure all required instructor documentation is completed and maintained, including instructor activity sheets, ACADIS video requirements, and PowerDMS policy reviews.
  • Perform law enforcement duties during critical incidents, including natural disasters and other emergency events requiring a law enforcement response. Participate in ride‑alongs and provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies as assigned.
Salary

Hiring salary commensurate with full‑time LEO instructional experience: $60,696–$66,000.

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma and eight (8) years of firearms law enforcement instructional experience
  • Associate degree and six (6) years of firearms law enforcement instructional experience
  • Bachelor’s degree and four (4) years of firearms law enforcement instructional experience
  • Master’s degree and two (2) years of firearms law enforcement instructional experience
  • Currently certified as a Basic Instructor Development (BID) Instructor
  • Currently certified S.C. Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)
  • Currently a certified LEO in another jurisdiction with full powers of arrest and the ability to become an S.C. LEO within one year of hire
Additional Requirements
  • Must work in inclement weather conditions
  • Must obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Maintain good physical condition
  • Availability to assist other law enforcement agencies during emergency situations
  • Availability to work holidays when classes are in session
Preferred Qualifications
  • Driving Instructor Certification
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

  • Extensive knowledge of contemporary law enforcement principles, practices, tactics, and methods
  • Knowledge of instructional visual aids and presentation development
  • Proven ability to instruct, research, and develop comprehensive lesson plans, presentations, and curriculum
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of student assessment and academic evaluation techniques
  • Ability to analyze problems, develop practical solutions, and make sound recommendations
  • Ability to coordinate and oversee the work of students and others
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, supervisors, and agency partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds
  • Willingness to participate in field training requiring travel and overnight stays
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions
  • Availability to assist other law enforcement agencies during emergency situations
  • Availability to work holidays when classes are in session
  • Must obtain and maintain a CDL
  • Maintain good physical condition
