Position: Residential Teacher (Academic Year), 2nd shift #60011323

Plans and provides a program of Independent Living Skills for students at the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind.

  • Conducts a comprehensive educational program which includes assessing students' academic and habilitative needs, implementing curriculum and programs, developing long and short term objectives, preparing lesson plans and assessment, utilizing appropriate teaching methods. Provides professional guidance related to students' needs, growth and
  • Serves as back-up substitute for residential advisor providing dorm supervision of students as needed for absences.
  • Prepares and maintains a variety of student records which show student assessment, progress, difficulties and needs.
  • Monitors individual student progress and revises teaching materials, methods and techniques as appropriate. Communicates progress of student as needed.
  • Meets with the Direct Support Manager to discuss program goals, implementation plans and progress and modifications.
  • Conducts self in such a way to serve as a role model and set examples from which the students can learn interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Works in cooperation with and assists ancillary service providers to promote consistency and optimal learning for students.
  • Must posses a Bachelor's Degree preferably in Education or closely related field. Also requires experience providing instruction and teaching of special needs students. This position may require communication modalities dependent upon employment placement.

    Must have the ability to plan and implement programs to meet students needs. Must be able to motivate students to move towards independence in academic, habilitative, and communication skills. Be able to provide academic suppport in all subject areas at a variety of grade levels. Creativity and initiative are essential skills for performing this job successfully. The assignment of students may include deaf, blind, or sensory multi-disabled.

    Specific success criteria will be based on student accomplishment of curriculum goals and objectives.
