Overview
GIE Molding Staff Engineer is responsible for component and tooling design and process implementation across the SM BU. The role ensures that the company's component design, supply, cost, and related factors are aligned to SM business expectations. The position provides expert engineering skill, judgement, and mentoring of junior engineers. He/she is responsible for assigned projects within the SM BU portfolio and will oversee the planning, coordination, and oversight in the development and implementation of new and/or replacement molds and related activities.
MainResponsibilities
- Mold design, development and industrialization: responsible for molding cell (mold, press, EOAT, etc.) build activities including URS, vendor selection, PO creation, mold design reviews, follow-up with supplier on mold build status milestones, FOT, FAT, SAT activities and validation (IQ, OQ, PQ and vertical ramp up).
- Build competitive advantage through the leverage of manufacturing process technology.
- Create capital appropriation documents CB-2.
- Coordinate with peers in SM BU to ensure adequate resources to support mold build activities.
- Contribute to innovative processes and first equipment development for SM BU new products development and lead industrialization activities.
- Lead suppliers and external design teams (vendor) for capital projects to manage cost, lead time and scope.
- Retrofits and upgrades (modernization) of existing molds and molding equipment.
- Partnerships with procurement for vendor selection.
- Ensure that BD mold and hot runner build standards are used for new equipment builds.
- Communicate clear priorities and objectives.
- Actively participate within an inclusive team organization across the SM BU.
- Drive individual engagement, performance, and results.
- Communicate assigned projects with the appropriate personnel and departments.
- Provide feedback and validation that equipment design meets safety and operational standards based on experience and stakeholder validation.
- Develop innovative concepts for mechanical systems and equipment based on project requirements and industry trends.
- Support operations during a production crisis (quality, supplier, etc.).
- Comply with all local, state, federal, and BD safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Molds built and delivered on time; completed right the first time (unless steel-safe adjustment is planned).
- FAT/SAT/Validation completed on time with no repeats.
- Prepare installation plan and full validation of equipment.
- Manage integration of new equipment, validation, and vertical ramp up into the existing manufacturing process with completed training plans and competence assessments.
- Minimize disruption to ongoing operations during equipment or software integration.
- Support documentation of equipment instruction and process parameters and site training on new equipment and applications.
- Oversee tools and resources needed to support equipment maintenance programs and reliability/up-time.
- Achieve targeted OEE and waste reduction results.
- Capital spend management with 95% or better accuracy.
- Establish relationships between molding KPIVs and KPOVs.
- Execute process verification, process validation and production ramp-up activities for molding.
- Seamless handover to plant team for production.
- Improve equipment efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Technical Molding Engineering:
Scientific Molding & Process Development (RJG/Decoupled preferred). - Establish standards for process windows, DOEs, decoupled molding, and capability (Cp/Cpk); remediate chronic defects.
- Mold design, hot runner design, tooling & maintenance lifecycle (experience desired).
- Lead mold build design reviews with vendors.
- Preventive/predictive maintenance experience; refurbishment/retirement decisions; spare strategy.
- Polymers & materials knowledge; resin behavior, moisture management, degradation and their impact on quality and cycle time.
- Influencing without authority.
- Navigates BU/GIE/site dynamics; secures commitments; resolves conflicts.
- Executive communication and data-driven storytelling; dashboards and decision narratives aligned to BU scorecards.
- B.S. in Engineering
- 5+ years experience in molding engineering discipline (process/tooling).
- Experience with tooling of injection molds.
- Proficiency in Solid Works; understanding of Mold Flow Analysis tools desired.
- Strong project management, organization, planning and capital budgeting related to molding equipment procurement and verification.
- Problem solving and data analysis skills.
- Experience with GMP, ISO standards and Lean Manufacturing; FDA-regulated quality environment desired.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%.
- Experience leading projects end to end.
- Strong risk analysis / FMEA and statistical analysis / SPC.
