Testing Engineer – Military Engines

Location:

Aiken, SC (also responsibilities in Graniteville, SC)

• Ensure that Rolls‑Royce meets business, customer and regulatory requirements for military engines.
• Coordinate, prepare and perform diesel engine development, calibration and engineering support work in an engine dynamometer test cell, on HiL/MiL systems and in the field.
• Develop, analyze and evaluate engineering solutions considering reliability, configuration, emission regulations, customer requirements and cost.
• Support commissioning and testing of prototype engines/vehicles and early production units with customers and subcontractors for applications such as wheeled/tracked military vehicles, mining equipment, marine, rail and oil & gas.
• Provide technical alternatives for challenges, support customer irregularities, troubleshoot field failures, and facilitate communication among engineering groups.
• Read and understand controller wiring diagrams, create custom harnesses, and perform CAN‑Bus troubleshooting and monitoring.
• Support After Sales, Applications and production staff with complex engineering issues and training.
• Maintain daily records of work hours, document task preparations and analyses, track project status, and assist with budget management.
• Mentor and train less experienced engineers and maintain a safe work environment.
• Perform special projects as required.

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Automotive Engineering and 3 years of experience testing and calibrating combustion engines in a dynamometer test cell and in the field; or 7 years of such experience.
• Ability to work in confined spaces, lift 20‑60 lb, and work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
• U.S. citizenship required; no visa sponsorship.
• Travel: 50‑80% domestic and international on short notice.
• Strong knowledge of internal combustion engines and diesel technology.
• Experience diagnosing diesel engines in test cells and installed in vehicles.
• Proficiency with mechanical, electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting, engine control units, instrumentation, data acquisition and signal processing.
• Excellent project management, communication, organizational and time‑management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances.
• Proficiency with mechanical and electrical hand tools.
• Preferred:
  Master’s degree; MTU, Daimler, Detroit Diesel controller knowledge; ETAS INCA, MTU Diasys, Xentry; test cell automation experience; military customer experience; MTU product knowledge.
