HDR is looking for an NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader to work as part of the Transportation Business Group in South Carolina. This position may be based out of any of our South Carolina offices:
Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, or Fort Mill. The NBIS Bridge Inspection Team Leader will conduct the inspection and analyses of bridges throughout South Carolina, leading a team to complete initial, routine, in‑depth, and fracture‑critical inspections of bridges and other miscellaneous structures for agencies (federal, state, local) and private owners using National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) and other relevant standards.
- Conduct field inspections and analyses of bridges, culverts, overhead sign structures, and metal traffic signal poles using various access techniques.
- Lead or assist with team planning and coordination to complete inspections, including a mix of daytime and nighttime field work and office tasks.
- Develop detailed technical reports and summary charts documenting the condition of the inspected infrastructure.
- Prepare live load ratings for bridge and tunnel structures, when desired.
- Provide occasional travel to inspect bridges and tunnels for clients across the country.
- Requires high school diploma or equivalent (8 years of relevant construction inspection experience may substitute).
- A minimum of 3 years of experience performing bridge inspections.
- Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Proven problem‑solving and documentation abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Must be willing to travel and perform field work.
- Must be safety conscious and responsible for the safety of team members.
- HDR's Drug and Alcohol Policy requires a successful drug‑screen prior to hire and thereafter, based on client requirements and applicable laws and regulations.
- Sponsorship (visa) for US employment authorization is not available now or in the future for this position.
- Technical school or Associate degree.
- Relevant industry certifications.
- Ability to interpret construction schedules.
- 5 years of experience for candidates with an Associate’s Degree desired.
- 2 years of experience for candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and EIT desired.
- Completion of FHWA‑NHI Course Safety Inspection of In‑Service Bridges.
- Completion of FHWA‑NHI Course Fracture Critical Inspection Techniques.
- Microsoft Office experience.
- Strong communication skills; self‑motivated, organized, flexible, and able to work both independently and with a project team to completion of tasks.
- Commitment to quality, accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record required.
- Willingness to travel / perform field work.
- Ability to work in challenging environments, including working from heights, in enclosed environments, and around traffic.
- Capacity to use hand tools, ladders, tape measures, and other equipment for bridge evaluation.
- Fast learner of policies, procedures, and relevant software.
- Active participant of HDR's employee‑owned culture is a must.
