Compensation
Starting salary: $80,827 per year. Shift differential pay is available. Sign‑on bonus of $10,000 may be offered.
Job PurposeTo provide direct nursing care to juveniles receiving services at a Department of Juvenile Justice secure facility in accordance with Health Services and department protocols, the SC Nurse Practice Act, and accepted professional nursing standards.
Job Responsibilities- Safely administer and document medications and treatments as ordered by physicians, psychiatrists, dentists, nurse practitioners, or standing orders.
- Ensure follow‑through of orders, delegating tasks to licensed practical nurses, medical assistants, or certified nursing assistants, and arranging off‑campus consultations, procedures, and surgeries as needed.
- Use an electronic health record system to maintain documentation of each encounter with a juvenile.
- Maintain a safe and sanitary environment and adhere to basic infection control practices.
- Assess the medical and health needs of juveniles during sick call and formulate, implement, and evaluate the plan of care in accordance with standing orders and protocols.
- Provide nursing care to juveniles assigned to the facility.
- Refer juveniles to higher‑level health care providers when required.
- Provide health education to juveniles as needed.
- Assist medical and psychiatric providers, and nurse practitioners, and participate in developing plans of care.
- Collect specimens for ordered laboratory tests.
- Conduct periodic routine health assessments of juveniles.
- Actively participate in orientation, training, and education of other nursing staff and other departments involved in daily care and safety of juveniles.
- Maintain, participate in, and update all training requirements while pursuing continued education to improve care delivery.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Licensure as a registered nurse by the State Board of Nursing for South Carolina.
- Validity of a South Carolina driver’s license (when required).
- Certification in Basic Life Support and/or Basic/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (when required).
- Knowledge of nursing principles and disease prevention.
- Ability to establish satisfactory working relationships with all personnel levels.
- Ability to establish priorities and carry out assignments.
- Ability to earn the confidence and cooperation of juveniles receiving services.
- Remain current in BLS.
- Wear personal protective equipment to prevent infection.
- Have a phone or pager to enable urgent or emergent contact.
- Accept the potential for physical assault, property destruction, and infections.
- Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in South Carolina.
- A bachelor’s degree in nursing, an associate degree in nursing, or a nursing diploma with at least two years of nursing experience in a relevant clinical area.
