Job Summary
Participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating health services in specialized nursing care areas for training and certification for the Attendant Care Project with the Center for Disability Resources, School of Medicine, University of South Carolina. Independently assesses, determines, and certifies participants or representatives for self‑directed care or representative‑directed care and evaluates attendants’ ability to provide safe and participant‑specific care. Provides training as appropriate and adheres consistently to USC/DHHS compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
Type of Staff Position:
Staff Time‑Limited (STL).
- Bachelor’s degree in a job‑related field and 2 or more years of job‑related experience, or an equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
- Registered Nurse licensure by the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
- Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) tuberculin skin test completed within 90 days prior to employment.
- Master’s degree in nursing, or Bachelor’s degree in nursing with 2 years of experience; or diploma from an accredited nursing school with 3 years of experience.
- Experience as a registered nurse in public health, hospital, or long‑term care settings working with people with disabilities, children with chronic physical health conditions, and/or aging/elderly populations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of professional nursing principles, clinical assessment, and safe patient care practices in community‑based settings.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and program regulations (e.g., SCDHHS and related programs).
- Skill in independently assessing participant needs and determining appropriate care and service arrangements.
- Skill in developing and delivering individualized and group training based on participant‑specific conditions.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and clinical standards to complex situations using independent judgment.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple priorities, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Observes participants and attendants, confirms suitability of the participant‑attendant match, and certifies participants’ and attendants’ capabilities.
- Receives client referrals, makes telephone contact within specified timelines, and provides training and certifications to participants, representatives, and attendants.
- Conducts phone calls and/or home visits to re‑evaluate participant/representative and attendant match and assists with problem resolution.
- Establishes an effective work environment, maintains an adequate file system, documents all contacts and evaluations, and provides accurate information to the ACP Central Office.
- Maintains effective communication with CLTC, HASCL, /RD, and MCC area offices and provides all required notifications within specified timelines.
- Communicates with the ACP Project Director and supplies administrative documentation, performance data, and reimbursements to the ACP Central Office on schedule.
- Assists Licensed Practical Nurses within the Attendant Care program in transitioning to the Medically Complex Children initiative.
- Recruits potential attendants in served geographic areas, develops training materials, and delivers training.
- Develops educational handouts on specific diagnoses for participants/representatives and attendant providers.
